Menlo Oaks Contemporary
Commissioned by a former Bay Area resident living in Singapore, this was our first project for an overseas client. We were able to overcome the near-total lack of face-to-face interaction through a combination of early morning virtual and densely packed in-person meetings.
The sophisticated clients wanted a simple house that would nestle quietly amongst the mature oak trees that stud their bucolic site. Our response was a composition consisting of a series of wood and stucco-clad boxes of varying shapes and heights, topped by a grand gesture of two sloped roofs, one rising to the east and the other to the south. These roofs in turn create vaulted ceilings below, whose rise accentuate interior-->exterior sight lines and help organize the floor plan. The vaulted spaces feature clerestory walls of glass which let light into the house nearly all day long, while refusing the harsh afternoon light.
One of the major challenges of the project was locating this much larger footprint amongst existing mature oak trees, many of which were already crowding the original house. In the end, only one diseased oak was removed to make way for the new home.
SCOPE OF WORK:
CONSTRUCTION OF NEW 6 BEDROOM 5.5 BATHROOM SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENCE ON A 31,193 SF LOT. RESIDENCE TO HAVE 4,015 SF LIVING AREA ABOVE GRADE, 990 SF LIVING AREA IN BASEMENT, AND 497 SF GARAGE. TOTAL FLOOR AREA AS DEFINED BY PLANNING (INCLUDING COVERED PORCHES) IS 5,043 SF
