Master Suite addition to the rear of a ranch style home, with partial house remodel of remainder.

Our clients were fans of the modern style but also wanted an addition that would blend in with their existing 1950's house. Our solution involved traditional massing and rooflines, but with contemporary details and materials. The result is a new addition that respects the old house, while being firmly of its own time and reflective of the current owners' taste.

We suggested a new rear-facing office "retreat" and new outdoor dining space during the design process, as a way to help activate the relatively underutilized backyard.

As part of the project, the kitchen and existing hall bath were remodeled while reusing the Owners' vintage refrigerator and breakfast booth, and an underutilized basement utility area was tuned into a bonus room by means of a welcoming winder staircase with metal cable rail. An open stairwell with skylight above helps illuminate this otherwise windowless area.

Interior finishes and furnishings were selected by the Owners, and Kara Silkwood, KDS Designs.
