Monte Sereno Contemporary Remodel/Addition

This is an ambitious whole house remodel + addition that sits on a flag lot. Flag lots are only attached to the street by way of a long narrow driveway. In this particular case, this home’s driveway is 20 foot wide and >100 foot long, and only after the flag does the property opens up to its full size.

Designing a home on a flag lot can have its challenges because the home can feel and look closed in. Flag lots are usually surrounded by other lots, and this lot is no exception. Additionally, most homes on flag lots have no "curb appeal" in the traditional sense, but offer much more privacy. In this design, we wanted our clients to have access to a gorgeous 2nd floor view of distant hills. This drove the location of the master bedroom, master bathroom, and balcony, and helped counter the closed in feel.

The clients were interested in contemporary style, but in the context of using the existing structure. Our design consists of new contemporary forms inserted among traditional roof lines, creating a transitional feeling. Wood siding, stamped concrete, and a new metal roof tie the old and new structures together visually. The corner window in the master bedroom frames a perfect view of those hills in the distance, and the large master balcony provides an even more direct visual connection.

The clients are two very successful physicians with grown adult children who were raised in this house. They wanted to repurpose their tired old structure as a welcoming place for multiple generations, and for their own aging in place. We are happy we have been able to help them achieve that vision.
