This photo shows a drainback solar hot water system. The top tank is a reservoir for distilled water that is pumped through the collector. The bottom storage tank is eighty gallons and has an electric element near the top to provide backup heating when needed.

Charging the system with glycol

Small panel on left of large collector powers a direct current pump. Panel needs to be cleaned regularly to prevent lowering the voltage which slows the pump down, delivering less hot water.
