Peek Inside an Empty-Nest Couple’s Stylish Forever Home

In this episode of Houzz TV Live, designer Jena Bula of Delphinium Design highlights a kitchen and primary bathroom she renovated for an empty-nest couple’s forever home in Charlotte, North Carolina. In the open-plan kitchen, white Shaker-style cabinets, a blue island, a porcelain tile herringbone backsplash and polished nickel finishes give the space fresh, modern-day style. A pantry wall hides a coffee station, while the hardworking island includes a paper towel holder and pullouts for garbage and recycling.

In the bathroom, large-format tiles minimize grout lines to make cleaning easier. Each of the two vanities has a storage tower with interior outlets for charging electric toothbrushes. And pampering features include heated floors; a jetted soaking tub; and a shower with body sprays, a handheld spray and a rain shower head.

Bula also discusses how she used Houzz Pro software for creating product proposals, invoices and mood boards.

I was wondering where the grab bars are for the soaking tub? I have some customers that would be interested in doing a tub like this.

Grab bars were visible in the video, but I don’t see them in the still shot. 👍🏻👍🏻

Age in place has been a longing for couples who are empty nesters. These parents finally have time and energy to focus on themselves. This is video and story of the choices you made are timeless. I loved watching this.

This is why I cant wait until my kids move out the house cause trying to remodel and maintain but with them breaking and denting things at the same time is an headache.

I’d move in tomorrow. Love the kitchen with the blue island and light blue chairs, the bathroom is calm but not white-white sterile. I’m sure his couple is thrilled to have their home look like this for the next chapter of their lives.

That kitchen is fabulous! Love the details, including the recessed paper towel holder. Right where it's needed, but not an eyesore on the counter (of that open floor plan).

And those bathroom mirrors are stunning! Who is the manufacturer?

I see no grab bars anywhere, not in the shower, nor the tub, yet the article states the tub has grab bars

Beautiful - completely beautiful. I wonder if the kitchen cabinet doors (on the long wall) open outward on regular hinges, or if they open out and push straight back into side pockets. (either way - still fabulous) Thanks for both the write up and the video.

It's so lovely....but as age-mid-70's empty nesters, I find it enormously large! I'd need a forever cleaning crew. My husband and I live in a well-planned 1200 sq. feet, and it is just perfect for us, easy to use, easy to clean. We are so glad we left our large home for someone else to enjoy.

Love the transformation. The bigger tile idea for less grout maintenance is going on my list of must do!
