Step Inside an Energetic Home Filled With Color and Character
Designer Laura Elliot wanted to help a San Francisco couple imbue their 1917 home with creative energy that reflected their personalities. And with three kids under the age of 5, the homeowners needed lots of family-friendly activity space.
Elliot drew upon the couple’s love of Justice League, the comic book superheroes, to fill the home with color and art while preserving its old-world character. A framed art piece depicting Wonder Woman sets the tone at the charming front entry. A soothing palette of blue ensconces the combined family room, game area and formal living space. Curved furniture pieces minimize potentially dangerous angles for the young kids.
In the dining room, a watercolor-like wallpaper creates a dreamy atmosphere. A vibrant wallpaper on the main bedroom ceiling recalls a colorful comic book panel. A forest-inspired theme cheers up a nursery. And a lively swim-themed wallpaper makes a happy splash in a kids bathroom.
Excellent examples of color done well. Am not normally a lots of color fan, but this is a space I could live in and love
So well done! I am a A blue fan but I've never been so daring. It's gorgeous and fun.
I appreciate this article as an example of how to carry a single color through the entire house without it ever getting boring. It will be an inspiration to me in my own whole-house redo.
It was helpful to click the more button and see additional photos. Thanks!
I love this.
Such a great house! Full of personality and so well done! Fantastic job!
Love the blue carried throughout the house. Just lovely, calm & very unifying. Another favorite is the curved sofa in the Family Room. I can “see” so much cuddling of family members & memories made. The only jarring feature was the ceiling in the Master Bedroom. I couldn’t sleep with that much “noise” above me. But, that’s me - the homeowners must like it.
Wow, this house is beautifully done! The thread of playfulness and fantasy and imagination comes through, even in the sophisticated adult spaces. And the children's spaces are delightful and whimsical. The color blue -- which I typically find cold, unwelcoming, and visually exhausting -- is so warm and soothing here. This home is a great example of marrying a designer's expertise and vision with a client's unique and individual personality.
Love your style!
What paint color, name and brand is trim, looks awesome, love how it stays soft in different lighting
Mitchell, any chance you or someone else has or could write a story full of pictures on carrying green or both green and blue through an entire house? I really want to see more of this.
Hi Mardree, that paint color is Benjamin Moore 2129-40 Normandy. So glad that you like it!
The blue palette worked great but loved the details as well.
I love the curved sofa, the wall discs, and the ceiling in the bedroom. Calm backgrounds with jolts of excitement.
I feel like I can’t imagine any other price of furniture in that family room nook. That couch is just perfect and makes everything work together in that space to feel intentional instead of like a problem space. Bathroom wallpaper is amazing!
Where did you get the custom area rug that is in the front entry/hall? It is really cool. I didn't know that you could have custom rug's made.
Hi Katie, that beautiful custom rug was made by Emma Gardner (https://emmagardnerdesign.com/rugs). She has a collection that can be customized, but can also create a new design from scratch.
Where I can find the fireplace Curtain?
Can you identify the source for the nursery rug? I love the flow of blue. My favorite colors are green and yellow. I had an old house and we did a flow of different shades of yellow and gold throughout the whole house. A 1905 farmhouse. Even the barn and outbuildings were painted a sesame color.
