Tour a Designer’s Glamorous Midcentury Modern Condo
Interior designer John McClain bought his Los Angeles condo before ever stepping foot in it. His husband had sent him photos of the space — designed by noted architect Ray Kappe with floor-to-ceiling windows — and McClain knew the home would be perfect for his style. “If you took Art Deco and midcentury modern and a little bit of traditional and Hollywood Regency and you rolled that up into a ball and threw it, that would be what I call my design style. And that’s what I did with the place,” he says.

I love the place. The only thing I don't like is this new interview format. That and seeing the same shot of the living room and kitchen over and over with the designer talking about it. Just show the place and stop making it that interview format. I remember one Houzz TV show about some guy that had this beautiful home with a little train in the property and it was such a nice story. This was no story, it was an interview. They showed the kitchen and it looked like it was filmed on some old 8 milimeter camra. Go back to the old way you did it, it was nicer.

Beautiful space! Reminds me of my condo I at The Waterford Condominiums in Kensington MD which also have one side all wall to wall; floor to ceiling windows. I had to replace the original parquet floors just 6 months after refinishing myself (ugh!) due to a flood from the dishwasher. McClains linoleum floors are a nice option.

Coincidentally, late yesterday evening I dragged my zebra-print hide from my study to the dining area adjacent to my kitchen in my open plan condo, with the intention of seeing how it looks under the table and chairs. I left it in a heap, and now I am motivated to to the work! How fortuitous.

Love the blue couch, and the geometric shapes through-out, and in the coffee tables, versatilty & ageless beauty....The entire house is like a tactile Paul Klee, with warmth and personality. A fantastic use of style AND maintaining a cozy and comfortable feeling. And all in such compact space! I've already stolen some of your ideas! I am also swapping out my tired wood floors for LVT because our hi rise condo always floods from leaky pipes and resident screw-ups.

Betty, the pillows were picked up on a vacation to Greece last year. They stopped me in my tracks and I had to have them. They are actually embroidered into that pattern. I love them too, thank you!
