(Addition) 2nd Floor Addition in Somerset
If only I could have a nice house with a master suite retreat and a presentable main floor living area, said this mother as she looked at the basketball hoop in her “living room”. It truly took some structural magic to make this happen including framing in the wasted vaulted ceiling space over the existing living and dining rooms to create a 457 sq ft master suite addition to the 2nd floor. Careful attention was paid in the exterior design to ensure the 2nd floor addition on the right hand side of the house had the same roof line as the existing 2nd floor space had on the left side of the house. The new addition looks completely seamless as a result. The new 2nd floor space includes a spacious master bedroom, WIC closet, upstairs laundry and the relaxing master bathroom this mother always dreamed of. On the main floor, the once vaulted ceiling in the living and dining rooms was lowered to match the ceiling height in the existing kitchen. Walls were removed between the existing living, dining and kitchen, beams were installed to carry the loads and the new kitchen was located where the old dining room had been (and vice versa). New hardwood flooring (to match the existing oak hardwoods) was laced in where walls were removed and the entire floor was refinished. The old fireplace/mantle were removed and a new fireplace, complete with Fresca Limestone panel surround and flat screen TV were installed making this a focal point of the room. The living room has plenty of seating for guests or for the family to watch movies or for the boys to play video games. The once cramped kitchen is now a space with easy accessibility from all rooms including the existing den/office located next to the new dining room. Timeless yet simple finishes were selected for their ease of maintenance, durability, cost effectiveness and cohesiveness with the existing home. This mother could not be more thankful for the remodeling genie that made her dreams come true (it just took some help from a great team!).
