(Custom Home) Tuscan on the Lake
The existing home was outdated, compartmentalized, and failed to take advantage of the lake views. The homeowners desired an open-floor plan that was multi-functional and showcased the home’s incredible lake views. The homeowners desired a Tuscan style home that paid tribute to the old world while providing the comforts of modern day living. Due to the homeowners’ desire to keep a smaller square footage, each space in the home is designed to be multi-functional. From the laundry room that doubles as a hair salon, to the office with the murphy bed to the guest room that converts to a yoga studio and to the lower level that serves as a separate living space and dual entertaining area, this home exemplifies efficient and functional design. Over their years of travel, the homeowners compiled photos from original Tuscan churches, famous monuments and wineries and desired to incorporate this old world feel into their new home. The flooring throughout the main floor of the home posed several challenges. The homeowner desired a repeating tile/hardwood pattern that included hand-made terra cotta tiles framed by a mitered edge hardwood border set on-point throughout the main floor. Additionally, the homeowner wanted the same hardwood flooring to continue on the 2nd floor but desired a larger width 5” plank upstairs on the 2nd floor while the main floor border was a 3.25” wide plank. Because the tile and hardwood border on the main floor needed to be at the same height, we had to source a ¾” terra cotta tile to match the ¾” hardwood border (a discontinued product we were able to secure). A 5” wide hardwood plank was available in the same finish which we utilized upstairs. A simulated terra cotta design was applied to the exterior deck extending the custom floor finish to the exterior of the home. Additionally, the homeowner desired to incorporate a pizza oven in their kitchen, the first residential pizza oven in this city’s jurisdiction. In order to meet the code requirements for a commercial grade pizza oven in the main kitchen, multiple HVAC and fire-code measures were taken. A brick veneer was applied to the exterior of the oven to blend in with the Tuscan theme. The homeowners desired a powder room that would transport their guests to Italy. The wine barrel vanity, coordinating wine barrel mirror, stamped copper sink, and oil rubbed bronze wall mounted faucet and lighting fixtures exude the old world feel while the LED illuminated art piece provides the finishing touches to the space. On the home’s exterior an aging finish was applied to the cedar siding to give it aged and weathered look while still protecting it from the lake’s elements.
