(Addition) To a Mid-Century Modern

This family of four loved living in their home on the water; they just longed for more curb appeal, additional interior space and an enclosed garage. By adding approx. 360 sq ft to the front of the house, a more formal and inviting exterior was created. With two young boys the couple desired a more functional and aesthetically appealing interior entry. By bringing the entry forward, a spacious slate-tiled entry was created that re-aligned the front door with a lake view along the back of the house. The space easily accommodates young children (or adults) who need to sit down on the entry bench to remove their shoes and a spacious storage closet for hanging coats. The couple’s existing bedroom was outdated and extremely cold due to the lack of insulation under the card-decking on the ceiling. The master ceiling was framed down to add insulation and adequate can lighting and the beam wood wrapped and custom stained. The existing master bathroom was extremely small, only included one vanity sink and did not have a tub. The addition elongated the master bathroom to accommodate a double vanity, large walk-in shower and soaking tub. The existing boy’s bedrooms were cramped with no closets and they shared a bathroom which also doubled as the guest bathroom. The extra space provided for two separate large bedrooms with closets for each boy and the ability to re-configure the guest bathroom. While the vanity and mirror were re-used, the tub/shower was moved and updated. A custom feature (and favorite of the homeowners) is a dual access laundry chute that provides a wood door access on the hallways side for the boys and a mirrored door access on the master closet side for the couple. Shelves were also added above the laundry chute to provide needed linen storage and a closet organizer greatly expanded the couple’s storage space. The addition of a 561 sq ft enclosed 2 car garage with an additional storage area for the husband’s motorcycle is greatly appreciated on those cold fall, winter and spring nights (hey, this is the Pacific Northwest after-all).
