(Addition) Mid-Century Modern Is Cool Again

The homeowners wanted to make their mid-century modern home cool again. The existing 4x12 beams rested on posts that obstructed the lakeviews and the card-decking above the beams did not allow for any insulation. In order to eliminate the posts, keep the ceiling height at 8ft and add insulation, LVLs were sistered onto the existing 4x12 beams, a new beam was added above and reverse brackets were used to remove the bearing points. This incredible engineering solution made an open floorplan great room with unobstructed lake views, maximized sight lines and a large sliding door opening to the deck possible. Drywall was added below the card-decking to modernize the interior, insulation was added above and the home was re-roofed. A live edge walnut raised bar complimented by the walnut island cabinetry brings warmth to the space and ties in with the on-site stained ceiling beams. White built-ins surrounding the new fireplace along with the kitchen’s perimeter cabinetry help modernize the space and bring light to balance the dark wood elements. The existing stairway was relocated and a custom built linear hemlock railing pays tribute to the home’s mid-century modern origins. The outdated exterior lacked curb appeal. Clear cedar siding was added around a new front door along with panel siding which was selected for budgetary reasons as well as its mid-century flair. New exterior railings and decking completed the exterior facelift. In the basement the HVAC trunk lines were eliminated (a ductless heat pump system was added) so the ceiling height could be maximized. Natural walnut wood elements from the main living space carry throughout the home and into master and guest bathrooms bringing continuity to the home. Modern features like a zero threshold shower with linear drain and earth toned tile.
