(Remodel - Custom) Annoying Structural Columns Finally Removed
The existing kitchen layout was dysfunctional and two large structural posts hindered the flow between the kitchen/dining room and the adjacent family room. By removing the two posts and adding structural beams, a true open concept design was created. This allowed the homeowners to move freely between their kitchen, dining and family room and also provide an unobstructed view from their kitchen to their family room. Because the existing cook-top was located on the island, it made the island unusable as a true seating and eating space. By moving the cook-top to the perimeter wall (and adding a true hood vent) a large peninsula was added on the other side of the kitchen providing adequate room for three stools. By eliminating the original double desk spaces (as they were simply junk collecting stations), and relocating the refrigerator to a different wall, a true corner pantry closet was created. This was a major improvement over the small pantry cabinet in the original design. The existing oven/microwave unit was re-used and located adjacent to the new refrigerator location. Material selections were made to reflect a transitional design style blending a traditional feel with a contemporary edge. An entertainment cabinet (coordinated with the kitchen cabinets) was added in the family room to house electronic components (the metal grate provides the air flow needed for the AV equipment). This once dysfunctional space has been transformed into an incredible living and entertaining space.
