(Addition) Modernizing a Dutch Colonial
This Dutch Colonial style home had potential for great enhancement as it had been remodeled several times, all by different novice remodelers. The result was a home that on the exterior lacked curb appeal (rooflines did not match up, no safe porch or deck space existed, and the entry was far from appealing). On the interior, the home lacked flow due to the multiple load bearing points causing a compartmentalized design with no large, open spaces. The finishes were outdated and extremely dark. By adding 1,076 sq ft to the home and using over 12 structural beams, the homeowners’ vision for an open and functional floorplan was achieved. A formal front entry was added at the front of the house where guests now enter into the grand 2 story entryway. The existing non-code compliant, steep and hazardous stairs were removed and new stairs were added along with a custom railing providing a great aesthetic while meeting all safety and code standards. The existing kitchen, which previously was situated in a corner next to the living room, was cramped and dark. The kitchen was re-located to a different exterior wall with multiple windows overlooking the beautiful back yard landscaping. With the kitchen now open to the dining space that connects to the 2 story great room (with a wall with windows) natural light now illuminates the space throughout. By removing the dilapidated carport area and adding onto the back of the home, the master suite was relocated from the existing 2nd floor location to the main floor creating an accessible and spacious main floor master suite oasis. A guest bathroom, laundry room and attached 2 car garage were also added to the main floor along with an expansive back deck. The upstairs space was converted into a guest suite complete with reading area with views of the newly refinished card decking. The interior of the whole house was remodeled with a transitional style. The white painted cabinets and light wall color provide a contrasting back drop for the wood beams and refinished card-decking on the ceilings, the oil rubbed bronze lighting fixtures and the natural hardwood flooring to pop. Natural stone paired with porcelain tile creates a beautiful aesthetic throughout that is also easy to maintain. Now this is what a remodel should look like (it pays to hire a professional)!
