(Custom Home) Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit [DADU]
The homeowners of this 1924 traditional home did an addition and remodel several years ago (adding a garage, master suite and creating a great room concept kitchen/living space. Fast forward a few years later and the daughter’s mother needed to relocate so they started exploring the idea of building a DADU (Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit) on the same property. Careful consideration was made to closely match the exterior of the DADU with that of the existing home (including the height of the roofline) but the style and décor for the interior of the new DADU was vastly different than that of the original home. The mother had collected art pieces from all over the world during her travels and wanted those to be the colorful statement pieces throughout her new home. She also wanted to make sure the space was inviting and fun for her grandchildren so a spiral staircase with a loft was added and she transformed the loft into the kid’s hang-out area. A full kitchen was added (underneath the loft space) and grey and white colors were selected to provide a neutral backdrop for her artwork to stand out. She carried that same concept through the bathroom and bedroom. An on-site finished hardwood floor brought warmth and continuity to the home and a fun Canelian color carpet was added in the loft for the grandkids. She loves being so close to her family but enjoys the independence of her own home where she can come and go as she pleases without bothering the family. The nearly 17 ft tall ceilings and large windows make the space feel spacious while adhering to the original DADU size restrictions. Mom couldn’t be happier in her new home.
