(Addition) For Wheelchair Accessibility

The existing home provided significant challenges for this mother when caring for her 40 year old physically challenged son and she desired universal design features to assist with his care. She desired a bedroom and bathroom space (connected to the existing family room which was currently being utilized as his bedroom) where she could maneuver his Quadriplegic wheelchair making it easier to help him with daily activities. A 285 sq. ft. addition was added to the house that included a spacious shower room (large enough to make transfers from the wheelchair to bathing apparatus sling and move the sling as needed) that also had a zero threshold, 5’6” entrance from the bedroom. Tile was added up the walls to create a true wet-room that could easily accommodate his wheelchair. Extra-long hoses were added to the handheld shower heads to provide extra reach for both bathing and cleaning the space. Extra blocking was added to the ceiling framing and special electrical supplies were added to support the sling apparatus used for bathing. Grab bars were added throughout for stability and security, something that her husband who has balance challenges also utilizes. An ADA height toilet and a wall mounted sink and medicine cabinet provide the storage the mother specifically requested while allowing easy cleaning underneath and avoiding any water damage. A privacy window was added in the bathroom to bring in natural light while a sliding glass door was added to the bedroom to brightening the room and providing access to/from the exterior of the home. The bed location was carefully chosen as her son only sleeps on one side of the room and also needs to be easily transferred from the wheelchair to the bed. Additional padding was added under the carpet in the bedroom to reduce the risk of injury in the event of a fall. The entire family is enjoying the accessibility, functionality and aesthetic appeal and of their new space.
