Asian Elegance/Rod Youngson
Nestled int the hillside above La Jolla Cove, this asian inspired home beautifully frames the ocean views with floor-to-ceiling windows in every major room in the house. Walking into this home you get a feeling of being on an exotic tropical island engulfed in simple elegance. The asian influence can be seen throughout the home from the hanging lanterns to the Japanese wood doors that were transformed into a dining table. The slate roof, tan walls, and wood-trimmed windows provide a backdrop of warm tones to feature an eclectic collection of art and antiques throughout the home. From bamboo to white oak, the material used in this home give it a welcoming feel. The bamboo gives the pitched ceiling texture while the white-oak beautifully frames the walls of the rooms and the floors. Great care was taken to create this architectural detail. Each piece of the bamboo was cut individually and laid out on the floor before being inserted in the framework on the ceiling. The streamlined kitchen features glossy, green limestone countertops with delicate looking fossil shells throughout. A shoji screen with translucent white panels can slide shut to provide a divider between the kitchen and the dining room. Hovering over the dining table is a long metal shelf with 20 candles of varying heights and sizes, giving the room the feel of a Japanese tearoom. The sleek, clean lines of the master bath room highlight the floor-to-cileing views from the filled travertine clad shower and tub. The elevated bath tub provides unencumbered access to the views. One of the most interesting architectural features of the home could be overlooked without a discriminating eye. Architect Rod Youngson uses large and small squares in grids, windows, and baseboards throughout the house. The wood ceiling grids result in patterns of light and shadow making a checkerboard pattern on the floor depending on the time of day. The details in this home give it a uniquely custom look while maintaining its simple, timeless feel.
