Kitchen Project 4
This early 20th century house’s kitchen needed replacements for the falling-apart cabinets and failing appliances. The homeowner asked for working appliances and more desperately needed counter space. Although the kitchen did have an island, it needed adjustment to both its placement and size.
The outdated gas cooktop was replaced with a GE Café gas range and XO chimney hood that moved the cooking out of the main traffic aisle through the room. Shifting the enlarged island a few inches provided enough clearance for access to the oven. The perimeter cabinets were re-configured to add additional counter space. Lighting was improved by replacing the glaring track lights with recessed cans to balance the light levels around the room; adding under cabinet lights added another layer of task light.
New cherry Dura Supreme Shaker cabinets with a Mocha stain are more in keeping with the character of the house. Some wall cabinets have glass doors and paper was added inside that matches the wall color to visually lighten the dark cabinets and allow displays to be seen. A Zodiac quartz countertop in Mossy Green is easy to care for and looks beautiful. The biscuit gloss subway tile backsplash is accented by a single row of artisan glass tiles. White oak hardwood flooring to match the rest of the house was installed in the kitchen.
The family can now enjoy their kitchen before, during and after meals.
