project 5 -master bath
Without changing the room’s footprint and fixture locations we made this master bathroom room look and function as if it was larger.
The very large tiled tub deck that restricted the floor space was replaced with a graceful free standing Maxx Ella Sleek soaking tub. Instantly there is more space to move around and no more bruised shins. A graceful Quoizel light fixture on the wall repeats the curves of the tub. The tub’s space is highlighted by painting different colors above and below a Sonoma Vihara Jura Irisdescent glass tile border on the wall. Framing the glass tile with painted wood is a budget friendly way to give the Mission look that the homeowners desired.
The room has high cathedral ceilings which seemed even higher with the existing low vanity and enormous untrimmed mirror. A new pair of cherry Bertch Bath higher curved-front vanities bridged by drawers and set on legs upped the style factor and comfort of use by the tall homeowners. Separate matching wood-framed mirrors with Quoizel light fixtures at each sink brought the room into a more human scale. Below each wood-framed mirror is the same glass tile and trim that matches the tub’s border to give the room a cohesive look and showcase the Brizio Baliza oiled bronze single handle faucets. To clear the clutter on the Cambria Nottingham countertop, between the two sinks a recess was created in the wall with shelves that are now home to all the bottles and electrical appliances. Adding another towel bar at the end of the vanity means each homeowner now has their own towel next to their sink.
The toilet remained in the same alcove, adding a wall cabinet makes storage of toilet paper convenient. The toilet paper holder by Delta has a built-in support for assist. Although not needed now, it will be ready if needed by a sore back.
The shower changed by swapping a bulky one-piece unit for a Florida Tile Light Peak tiled shower which actually increased the space inside the shower. Inside is a Corian covered corner bench, a large wall recess for shampoo bottles and a corner shelf by Delta with a built-in assist bar that places the soap in front of the user and has something to grab if they need it. The standard showerhead was replaced with an oiled bronze Delta In2ition shower head that can be both a fixed showerhead and a hand-held unit at the same time with Temp 20 indicators on the shower control to help avoid stepping into a cold shower. The new smaller shower door is more conveniently placed and a double towel bar under the window is convenient for both the tub and shower user. In keeping with the Mission look, the Alcarria floor tiles are porcelain that looks like slate with Warm Up pads and thermostat to heat the floor to make chilly mornings nothing to dread.
