Who: Aleksandra Missbrener of HGI Remodeling
Where: Spring, Texas
In her own words: “We respect and enjoy the freedom of individual design expression. You get to see the true side of people and their inner preferences for all things design.”
When you’re remodeling a kitchen or bath, the result should be stylish. But you should look beyond that, says Aleksandra Missbrener, who along with her husband Nenad is the owner of HGI Remodeling, a custom kitchen and bath remodeling company in Spring, Texas. “This is the time to make sure that your home works for you,” she says. Much of the work she and her husband do, she adds, is helping homeowners make smart choices that will enhance their home.

Multicultural inspirations. Missbrener credits her parents with sparking her love of design. “I watched my parents create a one-of-a-kind experience with their coffee shop and in the house we built in Croatia, as they pulled design ideas from the least expected sources in Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Great Britain and other countries we visited,” she says. She adds that her husband, Nenad Missbrener, whom she met in kindergarten, has a real talent for architecture, creating design that combine function and design.
Misbrenner was working in real estate and construction when the couple started working together flipping houses. They then branched out into high-quality custom remodeling, opening their firm in 2012.

From runway to daily life. Missbrener says that just as runway fashion trends are modified to fit everyday lifestyles, popular design looks need to be adapted to fit each homeowner’s personal needs. The elements “should work for you and your family’s lifestyle and fit with the rest of your home aesthetics,” she says. She adds that as with clothing fashion trends, homeowners should strive to create a cohesive look, pay attention to the details and consider practicality.

1. Focus on Efficiency
Look for ways to enhance how your space works for you. “Planning a remodel is a good time to rethink functionality,” Missbrener says. She recommends taking the time to think through all aspects of your design before the work starts.
The remodeled kitchen seen here includes a large island with plenty of workspace, a new pantry outfitted with organizers that reaches to the ceiling and is closer to the work area, a drinks refrigerator at one end of the counter for easy access and a pullout spice cabinet next to the stove. The Missbreners chose a rich blue for the island base, for contrast and also practicality. “It’s a high-traffic area, and the blue hides the scuffs,” Missbrener says.

2. Disguise Structural Elements
Minimize the impact of structural elements such as support beams and posts. The owners of the home in Spring seen here asked for an open kitchen. The Missbreners had to keep the support post in place, though; they incorporated it into the design by adding an L-shaped island around it and painting it white to blend in with the quartz countertop. “It creates an optical illusion of a seamless space,” Missbrener says.
To compensate for the lost storage space caused by removing two walls, the Missbreners added cabinetry around and above the refrigerator, creating a built-in look. “They gained more storage with the extra cabinets on top,” Missbrener says. A change of flooring subtly indicates the transition from cooking and dining area to relaxing area without interrupting the flow.

3. Plan for the Future
Think about how you might want to use your space in the years to come. For the owners of the Spring home seen here, redoing the primary bathroom was essential to ensure it would be functional as they aged. “This is their forever home,” Missbrener says.
The existing bathroom layout was inefficient, with a tub the homeowners never used and a lack of storage space. The Missbreners replaced the tub with a curbless shower. They then added a row of cabinets extending to the window for storage. Installing barn doors on the adjacent walk-in closet helped open up the interior space as well. The bathroom is now “organized and individualized for them,” Missbrener says.
