Who: Soheila Hatanian of Lamps Expo
Where: Los Angeles
In her own words: “Everyone here treats this business as if it’s their own, so I have confidence our customers will be satisfied when they walk out of the store.”
With a wealth of available options, it can be challenging to know where to start when it comes to lighting your home. “Many of our customers walk in with no clue what they’re looking for,” says Lamps Expo co-owner and manager Soheila Hatanian. “I’m proud to work with a team of knowledgeable, caring professionals who listen to our customers’ needs, whether they’re looking for a single lightbulb or an entire lighting system for their home.”

Genuine customer care. Hatanian has been a part of Lamps Expo since its inception, helping the business open its doors in 1989. “I love architecture, design and working with colors,” she says. “I help customers make decisions from my heart, as if I were lighting my own home.” This care and consideration extends to the entire Lamps Expo team. “Everyone who works here gives each customer the same high level of care,” Hatanian says. “It’s truly the best business.”
Easy, approachable guidance. Hatanian helps her clients navigate through the wealth of lighting options available. “From the beginning we ask if they’re remodeling their home, building new or making an upgrade,” she says. “Then we ask what style they’re looking for — modern, transitional or traditional, among others. That makes for a great starting point.” There’s no need to break your budget or stick to one brand family. “I learned in my experience it’s better to be flexible,” Hatanian says. “We can create a complete look with a $70 sconce or a $4,000 chandelier — or a mix of both.”

1. An Easy Indoor Lighting Guide
The amount of light you need inside depends on who you are, which room you’re in and how you use that space. “I always think if someone is closer to my age, they need a lot of light for reading, cooking or any detailed task,” Hatanian says.
And some areas of your home inherently need more light than others. “You need plenty of light in the kitchen for cutting, cooking and cleaning,” Hatanian says. “Your primary bathroom likely needs a mix of lighting styles for both getting ready for the day and relaxing at the end of it.”
Your primary bedroom probably doesn’t need much light, and the light you have is best on a dimmer, with the addition of a bedside light for reading. Similarly, a softer light is more suitable for a powder room, where you and your guests won’t be spending much time. “We consider all of these details to help our customers assign the correct amount of lumens,” Hatanian says.

2. Approachable Outdoor Ideas
Outdoor lighting has different guidelines entirely. “Outside lighting is just as important as indoor lighting and it’s essential to pick the right fixture,” Hatanian says. “In Los Angeles, you have to be aware of the lighting regulations and follow the correct formulas for illumination.” The Lamps Expo team knows the ins and outs, whether you’re in a Malibu dark-sky community or up in the hills where brightness is restricted.
When lighting a backyard, Hatanian will start with a few simple questions. “We ask how big their space is, how much they entertain, how close their neighbors are and what sort of landscape light they already have,” she says. “We can find ways to illuminate your backyard with a few simple fixtures that won’t bother anybody.”

3. Common Issues to Keep in Mind
One of the most common issues when shopping for light fixtures is judging the size you need. “Based on our experience, we know what size will work best dimensionally based on room size,” Hatanian says. “For instance, if you have a room that’s 20 feet by 20 feet, we know that you need a chandelier between 38 and 42 inches to proportionally fit your room and illuminate your dining table.”
Another key concern? Keeping up with the latest advances in lighting technology. “Customers are concerned not just about finish and style, but about LED technology, what happens when their lightbulbs burn out and the warranties of their fixtures,” Hatanian says. “We’re members of the American Lighting Association and stay up to date on all the information as it changes. We can tell our clients all about environmentally friendly and energy-saving lighting.”
