Educated expertise. Turner has degrees in engineering and applied mathematics and worked at the DuPont chemical company for several years, but construction is in his blood. “I was raised in construction,” he says. “My father was a contractor and my grandfather was a structural engineer and contractor as well.” After meeting his wife, Turner turned his attention to the design-build industry and founded Averon Construction in 1983.
Unrivaled experience. Turner values the entire Averon Construction team’s depth of expertise and its well-rounded, one-stop-shop approach to projects. “We have designers to walk you through the process, engineers to take your project through permitting and a team that has been together through it all,” Turner says. “People come to us for our experience, knowledge and quality, which comes from doing this as long as we have.”

1. Plan Ahead as Much as Possible
Home remodeling shows are an entertaining way to find some renovation inspiration, but they’re terrible at presenting a realistic timeline. Certain appliances — and especially windows and doors — can take months to arrive. Turner’s advice? Pick out your products as early as possible. “As a homeowner, this is your most important role during the renovation,” he says. “This is where you really need to do your job so that the contractor can focus on theirs.”
This River Oaks remodel features wall-length windows, entryway glass doors and another panel of glass doors that lead to the backyard patio and pool, all of which needed ample time to arrive. With diligent planning and a bit of patience, you’ll be thrilled with the results.

2. Check Your Contractor’s References
Finding the right contractor can be a challenge, but it’s worth the extra effort. “Contractors have a bad connotation,” Turner says. “To avoid a negative experience, I can’t stress enough how important it is to find a contractor you get along with and who gets along with you in turn. You have to be able to communicate well with one another.” For the right fit, check your contractor’s references, talk to their previous clients and take a look at their work in person if possible.
This Mediterranean-style home needed extensive repairs after being damaged by a fire. After the stress of the experience, the homeowners needed a reputable and trustworthy company they could rely on. “We take pride in our work and every project is personal to us,” Turner says. “Our team will be with you, from the site plan and floor drawings all the way to the finishing touches.”

3. Set a Realistic Budget
Not everyone has a head for numbers, but the pros can help. “The first step is to consider what the homeowner can do, or may have to do, based on their home,” Turner says. “For instance, if you’re in a 500-year floodplain, you’ll need to set aside a lot more money to raise your home. Similarly, if your home is historic, meeting those renovation parameters will likely cost more.” Turner advises setting aside some contingency funds no matter the project.
These Meyerland homeowners wanted to totally transform their small space into a home with a modern farmhouse feel. Turner and his team worked with them to make sure their priorities would fit within their budget. “It never hurts to ask, to see what can be done,” he says. “We’ll always listen to everyone’s ideas and find ways to make them a reality.”
