Houzz TV: This Guy’s Giant Lego Collection Proves Everything Is Awesome

Like most kids, architect Jeffrey Pelletier was a big fan of Lego as a child. But unlike most kids, he never gave up playing with the colorful toys. Now he’s amassed a collection of about a quarter of a million pieces in the basement of his family’s 1902 Seattle house. You may have read about it on Houzz. Now watch the video to see how he organizes all those gold bricks, yellow heads, gears and more.

Watch: See this amazing Lego-filled basement

My daughter & I played with Legos endlessly. She would come up with her own ideas when building houses & she's now an interior designer. I think the Legos were the beginning of her career path! This is a great video & Jeffrey's Lego room is so wonderful!!!!!!

My boys were lego fanatics as well. Luckily I saved most of those but now have 20,000 Legos stored haphazardly in bins and am trying to organize them for my 5-year old grandson who is already a lego fanatic. What a great room and good tips!

My husband has been playing, er, building with Lego(R) since he was five, and like this man never gave it up in the interim years as many teenage boys do. His collection isn't nearly as large but his storage solutions are similar and take up a couple of walls and a closet in our guest bedroom (the "Taj-ma-Lego"). I'm not sure I would want so many of the models out on display in the house, but in the pictures the sets that are out are at least tasteful and seem to fit in with the rest of the decor.

OMG, AMAZING!!! The Legos at our house are out of control. I cannot wake up without stepping on one. Totally awesome solution and that big screen TV coming down in front of the bins was just icing on the cake. Great use of space. You guys did a great job. Wonderful home. Kudos!

What an inspiration! I have 3 sons and 1 daughter, all who played endlessly with Legos as kids. At one point in time, we had the Lego pieces all organized by color and shape, but that system got lost in the chaos of teenaged years and now they are dumped in mixed bins. Finished pieces are still scattered throughout my home. My basement looks similar to the "pre-renovation" photos shown here....which makes me wonder if we could do a similar project of removing the floor and digger deeper to increase headspace.

Love the colors and the details in the rest of the house as well! What a fun, beautiful, amazing home and family.

Mine only fill up 3 large bins and some fishing tackle boxes. How nice to have a bar next to Lego's, wonderful. A cocktail and Lego's, great combination!!!!

I would love to pull this off as I approach Grandparent season of life. When our sons were growing up we had a very small home, so the Lego table we built was simply a large piece that had 4" sides, and slid under the skirted love seats to allow for the space to accomodate for entertaining, ...however, sometimes it was still sitting on the coffee table, after the kids were sleeping. Our adult friends came and the structured/non-structured side would quickly be seen in their lego creations...Lego guillotenes and rolling heads ... great Friday night therapy.

I truly love so much of what I see on Houzz but this article really inspired me to comment. I never played with Lego as a child (wish I had, might have been a little more creative today!) but I just love how Pelletier is so passionate about his hobby but even more so what an amazing organizer he is. I want him to come to my house and help me organize my stuff!!! What they've done with their home is incredible and how they've taken a hobby and made it into art in the way it's displayed is so cool. And speaking of cool, Pelletier just seems like he'd be a super cool dad! Really loved everything about this article. Thank you!

petitourson, The upper storage bins look like Ikea's Trofast system which is probably one of the most economical ways to get this kind of look and function. The lower plastic drawers are probably Sterilite which come in a variety of sizes and drawer configurations. You may be able to purchase them online. Ikea does also have a similar system of smaller plastic drawers in cases but I don't recall the name.

here's a tip for Lego organizing: do NOT do it by color. it seems like the obvious way, but by watching our 4-year old it became clear very quickly that when the bin is all one color, it can be very hard for a small person to discern shape and size. once we decided to separate the bins by brick size or function, we immediately saw our son's creativity explode. it truly happened overnight. with clearly separated sizes and shapes, it's easy to find what you need; within each bin, it's easy to see the color you are looking for.

I love all the trim work. I grimaced at the "digging" part of the basement, but not because I'm against it -- merely because I just spent 4 hours digging a mound of clay (dirt) that needed spreading around the "yard" that isn't in yet. I can't imagine having to haul it upstairs to get it outside! Loved the outcome though. What a superb job of renovating. I've been to Legoland and think you could certainly top it!

My kids LOVE Lego:)
We even wanted to go to the Lego factory in Denmark, but alas is was 4000$ U.S. Each. Lol.
But your cabinets remind me of our very cheap versions. Lol
I bought many of those plastic rolling carts with wheels. Some have fat and some have skinny drawers. They pull out the drawers and take them wherever they want.
So my kids consistently rearrange how the Lego is organized.
People, basic, weapons, lol (they have tonnes of Star Wars Lego and so there are lots of blasters and light Sabres, lol).
Sometimes it's wheels and hinges, all grey pieces and then a bucket with just "weird" pieces lol.
If ever they want to do a wholesale rearrange, my only rule is on a sheet or blanket so it's contained:)
They both build things, save them and use them for a month or so, then they take them apart, and start over again:)
Lego is awesome. Expensive, but awesome.
Cool to see your place:), thanks:)

Even without the Legos, this home is amazing! Seattle does have the occasional overcast day (lol), and the rich wall colors balanced with clean white are the perfect foil. I love how the darker colors act as a "palate pleaser" (eye pleaser?) of sorts between the brighter colors.
Having lived in the Pacific Northwest for ten years, I think Jeffrey and Chris picked the perfect location for their lifestyle and decorating style. Kudos to them both.

Love your basement!!! My husband has always been a Lego fanatic, he became an aerospace engineer and still plays with them. Our 3 teen boys adore Legos as well... One wants to be an architect he says. (Another wants to be a professional Lego guy of some sort, LOL!) But I've also given over a huge chunk of the basement over to their Lego creations, and it has been YEARS since I endured the pain of stepping on a Lego piece because they're just so organized. (Though mine didn't like the color system, they mostly keep stuff built in their ever changing city built atop a ping pong table.)
I remember when they were little I tried "accidentally" vacuuming up the stray Lego pieces when I was cleaning... Then to my horror, my boys noticed the pieces were missing, told their Dad... They took an inventory and then ordered the missing pieces!!! I knew then that I should just go with it, it was useless to fight it. LOL!
One of their sisters' enjoys playing with Legos too... She's my artist. :) Their oldest sister grew out of them, but I'm not sure the others ever will. Oldest sister gave her collection to her brothers "on loan." She expects the collection back when she starts her own family because even though she personally grew out of Legos, she expects to encourage her future children to play with them. :)
And we kept all of the boxes... To my dismay. LOL! Stored in the utility section of the basement. I really want to get rid of them, but it makes my hubby and boys recoil in horror at the thought. Sigh. If I got rid of them, they'd probably just buy duplicate sets just to keep the boxes... So I guess I'll just walk around singing "everything is awesome." LOL!!!!!

Hurray! I finally found the proper storage solution for the ever growing number of Lego pieces in my house. Here it is for the all of you that live in UK. After researching and buying different storage boxes including IKEAS Kupol and Trofast I came to the conclusion that Really Useful boxes and drawers are just that really useful. They are a little more expensive than IKEAS Trofast but it is worth while in terms of future proofing future needs. Really Useful drawers are designed with Lego thinking in mind. You can combine different sizes of drawers in neat towers of the hight you want, put in insets for the little LEGO pieces and even store ready build sets for the kids to play whenever they want without losing any pieces. If you shop around you can get the Really Useful drawers at an affordable price. I just bought 4 towers of 11x7 litres and 5x12 litres from www.hobbycraft.co.uk and in a matter of hours the kids have already populated and sorted all possible drawers. We discovered that we need more drawers and found this website www.storage4crafts.co.uk where they even sell inserts and bigger combinations of tower drawers. Of course we want shorter towers so we purchased extra tops, extra wheels and 25 litres drawer together with frame structure so we can build our own towers that eventually will sit in a build in in our multi purpose dinning room. I would have loved to have a basement but that is not possible in UK. I even plan to have a Golia table which will serve as a LEGO built on surface, dinning table an even a console when the kids want to it in their comfy puffs for a TV session but of course not all in the same time. I will put pictures of my multi function space when it is done. Watch this space!
