Finding his passion. Gockeler discovered his passion for building when he bought and remodeled his first home in 2008. That led him to start KraftMaster Renovations that same year. Gockeler drew on his skills and knowledge about landscape architecture and sales to assemble a team of professionals in every discipline and trade. “I took a businessman’s approach,” he says.
Guiding and listening. Gockeler says that while he provides guidance throughout the process — “There are so many steps,” he says — he also follows the homeowners’ lead on what they really want. “Everything is individual to the client,” he says. “My job is to offer ideas and alternatives to get them what they want.”
Looking for ideas for a remodel designed specifically for you? Gockeler provides some tips below.

1. Explore All Your Options
Look at all the possibilities and design approaches when remodeling your home. This includes both reworking your interior space and making any addition look like it was part of the home’s original design. “It should enhance the aesthetics and seamlessly blend into the home,” Gockeler says.
The owners of this Chatham home came to Gockeler looking to expand their attic to create a primary bedroom closet. After exploring the possibilities and their wish list, they decided to expand the second floor over the existing garage to create a new primary suite. The addition also resulted in a more balanced exterior facade. “Before, it looked chopped-off,” Gockeler says.

2. Include What You Love
Tailor your choices for a space to match how you intend to use it. When asking Gockeler to remodel his primary bath, a Chathman homeowner didn’t want to overlook any possible feature. “He told me he wanted every doodad available,” Gockeler says.
The oversize shower is filled with the specialized details and additions the homeowner wanted. These include both steam therapy and chromatherapy options, a speaker system, a defogging mirror, body sprays, a rain shower, a bench and a niche. “There’s even a pump in an adjacent closet for a shower dryer that will dry out the entire room once you’re finished,” Gockeler says.

3. Design for Your Life
Match your remodel to your wants and needs. Gockeler says this is especially important when it comes to creating a functional kitchen. “You want a kitchen that can transform as your life events happen and are celebrated,” he says.
The previous kitchen in this Basking Ridge home was cramped and lacked direct access to the living room. Gockeler expanded it into the adjacent playroom to create an eat-in area and added a doorway to the living room. He also carved an alcove out of the wall separating the living room from the kitchen to install the ovens and refrigerators. The added floor space created enough room for an island, which allows the homeowners to work together. “It works for both day-to-day meals and for entertaining,” Gockeler says.
