Ways to highlight the area behind the bed don't have to be hazardous. Examples include paint, wallpaper, draperies, tapestry, and shelves to either side. I like shelves to either side AND paint. Just trying to clarify. The point is to take it to the ceiling to VISUALLY counter ballance the visual weight of the bed. I like the color of the area at the head of the bed to be similar to the bedspread too.

Love the hospital tracks idea for the drapes. I prefer not to disturb the trim on windows. In my small bedroom I positioned the bed on angle in a corner. Then, what to do about the triangular space behind the headboard. Triangular floating shelves were built. I made a cornice from moulding to attach to the ceiling (the hospital tracks could work here instead) and I installed drapes made from gorgeous baranzelli fabric on the back of it to create a focal point and hide the shelving where I store seasonal bedding and the like. It looks great! Also, wall mounted lamps bedside work really well in a tiny bedroom.

Someone mentioned low ceilings. My bedroom is an attic with low ceilings. I do not have a light fixture on the ceiling nor do I have an outlet near my bed which creates a very dark room. Any advice would be appreciated.
