Forest Retreat

This house represents the journey of one Houston couple who dreamed of living within an idyllic grassy meadow bordered by Texas oaks and buffered by a nature conservancy zone. The attraction to this land further fueled the imagination and need to design a home that could reflect the serenity of its surroundings. A sensitive relationship with the landscape drove the approach to the house to become a curated path by car. The layout of the estate is guided by a careful meditation on framing chosen views, reclaiming raw materials from the site and accommodating large family gatherings. These three buildings engage the site and each other at differing levels of privacy and panoramic views. The sleeping quarters is a wing that houses the Master Suite with a fireplace and two bedrooms. The family pets have a special zone that connects the private sleeping rooms to the second building. The lodge wing is centrally located and is dominated by a grandiose great room covered in a canopy of graceful scissor trusses and a rustic stone fireplace. This large space provides a majestic setting for large family gatherings that can spill into the wraparound porches with sweeping vistas of the meadow and forest as backdrop.
