This deep-red, Persian antique runner was custom sized and fitted on this expansive staircase, one of many in this architecturally complex and dynamic house. It cascades down and into another antique beauty with a unique, green center medallion complementing the green tones of the walls.

A young couple with three small children purchased this full floor loft in Tribeca in need of a gut renovation. The existing apartment was plagued with awkward spaces, limited natural light and an outdated décor. It was also lacking the required third child’s bedroom desperately needed for their newly expanded family. StudioLAB aimed for a fluid open-plan layout in the larger public spaces while creating smaller, tighter quarters in the rear private spaces to satisfy the family’s programmatic wishes. 3 small children’s bedrooms were carved out of the rear lower level connected by a communal playroom and a shared kid’s bathroom. Upstairs, the master bedroom and master bathroom float above the kid’s rooms on a mezzanine accessed by a newly built staircase. Ample new storage was built underneath the staircase as an extension of the open kitchen and dining areas. A custom pull out drawer containing the food and water bowls was installed for the family’s two dogs to be hidden away out of site when not in use. All wall surfaces, existing and new, were limited to a bright but warm white finish to create a seamless integration in the ceiling and wall structures allowing the spatial progression of the space and sculptural quality of the midcentury modern furniture pieces and colorful original artwork, painted by the wife’s brother, to enhance the space. The existing tin ceiling was left in the living room to maximize ceiling heights and remain a reminder of the historical details of the original construction. A new central AC system was added with an exposed cylindrical duct running along the long living room wall. A small office nook was built next to the elevator tucked away to be out of site.

This East Village penthouse was designed for nocturnal entertaining. Reclaimed wood lines the walls and counters of the kitchen and dark tones accent the different spaces of the apartment. Brick walls were exposed and the stair was stripped to its raw steel finish. The guest bath shower is lined with textured slate while the floor is clad in striped Moroccan tile.

Two custom designed loft beds carefully integrated into the bedrooms of an apartment in a converted industrial building. The alternate tread stair was designed to be a perfect union of functionality, structure and form. With regard to functionality, the stair is comfortable, safe to climb, and spatially efficient; the open sides of the stair provide ample and well-placed grip locations. With regard to structure, the triangular geometry of the tread, riser and stringer allows for the tread and riser to be securely and elegantly fastened to a single, central, very minimal stringer.

TRUADDITIONS
High ceiling over entry and living room converted to new open loft for kid's play area. Essentially the loft became one big toy box where all toys were to be kept. This allowed the parents to reclaim the formal living areas below. Coffer ceiling was added to new first floor (octagon coffer shape). Chris Doering at TRUADDITIONS.

Jackson Brewery Loft, San Francisco, CA
The Jackson Brewery building was built in the early 1900’s. We have taken an open space consisting of 2500 square feet of brick walls and exposed steel beams with 20’ high ceilings and turned it into a contemporary, home automated loft. To access this loft we designed a custom clear elevator door, which reveals the elevator shaft while adding natural light. We wanted to keep the charm and historical characteristics of this building while integrating a highly modern feel.
This “High-Tech Bachelor Pad” was featured in CEDIA Electronic Lifestyles winter 2010 issue. Electronics such as heated floors, automatic window treatments, a state of the art multi-zone sound system, LED lighting systems, with pre-programmed lighting scenes for every mood, and push of the button shower control valves are just to name a few of the high-tech features that contributed to this lofts win for the 17th Annual Electronic Lifestyles Designer Award.

This foyer was updated with the addition of white paneling and new herringbone hardwood floors with a walnut border. The walls are covered in a navy blue grasscloth wallpaper from Thibaut. A navy and white geometric patterned stair-runner, held in place with stair rods capped with pineapple finials, further contributes to the home's coastal feel.
