Color Craftsmen: Fireplace Makeovers
This wood ceiling needed something to tone down the grain in the planks. We were able to create a wash that did exactly that.
The floors (reclaimed red oak from a pre-Civil War barn) needed to have their different colors highlighted, not homogenized. Instead of staining the floor, we used a tung oil and beeswax finish that was hand buffed.
Our clients wanted to have reclaimed wood beams in their ceiling, but could not use true old beams as they would not be sturdy enough to support the roof. We took their fresh- cut fir beams and used synthetic plasters, paints, and glazes to give them an authentic aged look.

Tumbled glass, underlighted with LED light rope. These glass panels glow at night. They are connected to a low voltage transfomer. I saved clear glass, then broke it up with a hammer and tumbled it in a cement mixer. It only takes about 40 minutes to make the shards completely safe. You can ram your hand into this stuff with immunity. Very interesting. Imagine guiding a person to a destination with a ribbon of light, compared to the common walkway light

After a major house refurbishment and extension, this jewel of a property tucked away in Harpenden found the addition of Solar Screens to be the solar management solution they were looking for…
This modern property’s extension works as a multi-purpose kitchen/diner/living room. Around the perimeter of the extension is a patioed area featuring a fire pit, BBQ, furniture, and an outdoor dining area. So, being able to seamlessly move in and out of this room was very important.
The extension is at the rear of the property and has a large set of sliding doors. These provide natural lighting and a fantastic view of the beautiful south-west-facing garden.
Whilst the sunlight made this kitchen/diner a comfortably bright area of the house most of the time, it wasn’t immune to excessive heat build and harsh solar glare. This was particularly impactful from midday to evening and therefore affected the homeowners during evening meals.
To ensure they made the most of their new extension, our customers required a simple solar solution that wouldn’t impact the view of their wonderful, landscaped garden.
After meeting us at the Homebuilding and Renovating Show, our customers told their property developer, Impala Property Ventures, they were interested in our solar screens to help manage harsh solar glare and excessive heat build.
The Power Screen was handcrafted and tailormade in our factory in Peterborough. The chosen mesh was 20:30 black, and the screen metal work was colour-matched to the frames of the sliding doors.
We returned to Harpenden and fitted the screen externally to the property. We also installed a wall switch, further integrating the screen into the customers’ everyday living experience.
Thanks to the Solar Screen, our customers can now enjoy their kitchen/diner with greater solar management at their fingertips.
Are you looking for something to control harsh solar glare and excessive heat build? How about insect protection? Get in touch with our team of experts today with some basic measurements, plans or images of the area you’re looking to screen to discuss further.
