A cramped and dated kitchen was completely removed. New custom cabinets, built-in wine storage and shelves came from the same shop. Quartz waterfall counters were installed with all-new flooring, LED light fixtures, plumbing fixtures and appliances. A new sliding pocket door provides access from the dining room to the powder room as well as to the backyard. A new tankless toilet as well as new finishes on floor, walls and ceiling make a small powder room feel larger than it is in real life.

W. David Seidel, AIA - Architect Yes, it's a blue-gray ... before committing to a house color, paint some test patches to confirm it works. Better yet, use a color consultant.

Carolyn Albert-Kincl Design I see a lot of pictures of contemporary bathrooms where all that would be visible to an average sized adult would be their head. The poor kids in the family must not even know what they look like. Let's hope there's a full length mirror closeby.

W. David Seidel, AIA - Architect The owner selected those, she said: "The Caesarstone countertop is Blizzard. The tiles are 2x12 inches and the color is Swiss Coffee. I'm afraid I don't have the brand but they were purchased from Ceramic Tile design in San Francisco."

Because of the general lack of accessorizing space in a bathroom, it can be difficult to give that room a personality all its own. Bone inlay turns a necessity — the mirror — into a focal point.

It's true that if your existing bath fixtures consist of a pink sink and lemon yellow tile, you will be hard pressed to create the black and white palette this look calls for. If you have a bit more time and savings to invest in your bathroom makeover, adding wallpaper or a dark paint color to the upper walls and white paneling below (less pricey than retiling) will go far. If you are considering replacing the sink, having a vintage cabinet or table fitted with a simple sink bowl can be a creative solution. While you are at it, remove that medicine cabinet and hang a pretty mirror instead.
