'right' fireplace mantle height

We are redoing out fireplace with some natural stone and my husband is making a live edge maple mantle. We are having trouble deciding on what the finished mantle height should be.

Our ceilings are 8' and the finished width of the stone fireplace will be 61". There will be 12" of stone on either side of the gas insert. The mantle is 4.5" thick and we plan on having the finished mantle width 1 or 2" in from the edge of the fireplace.

As pictured it is 39.5" from the hearth to the bottom of the mantle and 49" from the top of the mantle to the ceiling.

Does it need to drop down a bit or go up so there is more space below the mantle?

I appreciate any advice!

The measurement you have not mentioned in the depth of the mantel. Start with 12" above the opening...then add the depth of the live edge mantel...for instance 12" + 6" in depth...18" above the opening would look great.

Thank you for your advice! The mantle is slightly curved, it will be 9.5 at its widest and 7 at the narrow end. Although we could trim it down if that seems too wide...

I guess this question is geared towards JudyG. So strange, this is almost identical to a fireplace we are working on with a live wood mantle. However our mantle is 10" deep….I am wondering if it should be cut back a few inches as it seems quite deep
