Allow me to offer some insight.

Whether or not brass fixtures will patina or tarnish depends on the nature of the finish. Some companies design their fixtures with raw-metal finishes, which will indeed patina and tarnish over time. Another manufacturer may offer products sealed with a clear coat to prevent tarnish, rust, build-up, etc. While, another company may offer brass fixtures with powder-coating; fixtures with this finish may accumulate a calcium like build-up but, generally won't tarnish or rust.
