Thе Internet hаѕ changed countless areas іnоur daily lives. Thіѕhаѕnоtоnlу changed thеwауwе access information, but аlѕоthе information wеhаvе access tо. But іnthе world оf commerce, I ѕееthаt people whоhаvе stayed іnthераѕt typically uѕе techniques аnd processes developed decades аgо.

Inside Out Oxford Bespoke Garden Rooms
We asked founders Jim and Walt to reveal the secret behind their successful business and working relationship. Here's what they said...
JIM: WALT, WHAT WERE YOUR FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF ME WHEN WE FIRST MET? DID YOU EVER THINK WE WOULD SET UP A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS TOGETHER?
Walt: Your confidence was the first thing I noticed! We were thrown together for a charity bike ride to Paris, spending most training rides talking about things but mostly garden rooms!
The confidence and ‘joie de vivre’ was catching so after a while I hoped we would set up a business together!
It was obvious you could back it up with your business acumen and knowledge. It was my good luck that we both wanted a new challenge doing something more exciting than we were presently doing.
My advice in looking for a business partner, it has to be someone with complimentary skills, covering your weaknesses if possible, but able to have a laugh and a pint together, too.
WALT: JIM, WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE OUR WORKING STYLES AND HOW DO WE DIFFER?
Jim: I think we overlap massively in our core values — the design part is really important, we need it to be fun, we strive for customer satisfaction, and we don’t want to cut any corners.
We love the relationship part of working with our customers and we love building really beautiful things for them.
Our differences are very much in what we bring to the table — Walt is an artist and I have spent a lot of time in IT. So we naturally gravitate towards associated skill sets and input to the business.
JIM: WALT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT MEETING A NEW CLIENT?
Walt: Well, usually when we get a call, the client has done their homework and has found us by eliminating most of the offerings on the Internet, and the expensive ‘posh sheds’ from garden centres, so we can usually start with bouncing ideas around to get to a desired building.
I love it when clients ask loads of questions because that means they have done lots of research to find out what they don’t want!
WALT: JIM, HOW SOON DO YOU START SKETCHING IDEAS AFTER WE’VE SPOKEN TO A NEW CLIENT? DO YOU FIND YOU HAVE LOADS OF IDEAS OR DOES ONE OFTEN STAND OUT?
Jim: This happens pretty much immediately because the starting point is always to sketch the site, and this tends to prompt ideas as part of that process.
A lot of ingredients will shape a design, such as where the sun travels across the site during the day, existing features such as trees and outbuildings and so on.
Some customers’ gardens and requirements make it difficult to arrive at a final design, but it’s usually fairly quick (at least for version 1!).
JIM: WALT, WHICH OF OUR BUILDS HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE?
This is like choosing a favourite child! I think it’s the Boar’s Hill Housekeepers Cottage because it was a huge challenge to build it on stilts around trees on sandy clay soil! This was the first time we had to use ground screws for a project.
WALT: JIM, WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS, ESPECIALLY DURING A PANDEMIC?
Jim: Dealing with the constant rise in prices and the shortages of everything, from timber to craftspeople.
JIM: WALT, HOW HAS THE PANDEMIC CHANGED THE WAY WE WORK DO YOU THINK? HAS ANYTHING IMPROVED OR GOT MORE DIFFICULT?
Walt: Projects are taking longer due to Covid restrictions. We’ve lost workers to ‘the ping’ for 10 days at a time!
We work outside mostly so it’s generally relatively normal, with added things like sanitiser and festival toilets.
With the double whammy of COVID-19 and Brexit, quoting accurately is very difficult so we really only tend to work for and with people who understand the changes that have happened.
Garden room working spaces have boomed in the last two years as more people can, and have to, work from home.
WALT: JIM, WHAT DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO ABOUT YOUR WORKING DAY?
Jim: Our projects are fun, so I find myself looking forward to most aspects of project work during the day.
I really enjoy the time we spend together as a team — especially when we’re winding down at the end of the week and enjoying a swift cold one!
JIM: WALT, WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLAYLIST WHEN WORKING?
Walt: I have BBC 6 music on the radio a lot but increasingly I have been putting playlists together for a show on Orb Radio, which we did through lockdown. Click here to listen to my favourite playlist from there.
WALT: JIM, WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LIKE TO LISTEN TO WHEN YOU’RE WORKING?
Jim: I love Radio 6 Music and this is my ‘go to’ station when listening to the radio. From time to time I enjoy playing an old favourite album from beginning to end.
A while back Walter and I listened to the entire ’The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway’ album by Genesis, back to back, which took most of an afternoon!
We talk about music a lot at work, so this tends to shape what we like to listen to.

A relatively small site (400 m2) with big trees has been the main source of inspiration of this house. Decisions have been made to improve the relationship between the interior of the house and the garden, both in ground and upper level. Thus, the project conceives the landscape as a part of the house, and this garden is also a sustainable barrier that regulates the temperature inside (mainly deciduous trees). An open plan has allowed large perspectives. Wherever it was possible, sliding doors allow spatial fluidity while still allow some privacy. Natural materials (wood and stone) reinforce the connection with the garden.
