The keyhole motif that this painting depicts seems at first unique to the artists work until one realizes thats its just another view of the landscape either through a window or elsewise framed by some other form. Its a special variant that is actually the subject of Window at Tangier the left hand panel of this triptych. In that window we are offered a broad panorama of the city perhaps from the artists hotel room. But in this painting the view is constricted with respect both width and depth. The painting created in the company of his old Fauve comrades Marquet and Camoin the painting is exclusively concerned with rendering a tightly defined architectural space as seen under the violent contrasts of light and shade typical of North Africa where the colors function accordingly.
