Would help to see a view from farther back -- e.g., is this alone in a flush wall or does it stick forward? Would suggest tiling or stoning over brick, although paint might be an intermediate step that would help you see what you like. I think a mantel would compete with the niche above, so you might have to pick which look you prefer. Can you give us more guidance as to your overall style?

Get rid of the brick. There are some great concrete "paint" products to change the color of the hearth. Replace the brick trim along and above the fireplace opening with granite or glass tile. Try for a "softer" look. There are a lot of "do it yourself" mantel projects you can do with some simple tools. Big demand for flat screen tv's over the fireplace BUT you must have the mantel to deflect any heat from the fireplace. Good luck.

The fireplace is in the middle of a long wall, app. 17 feet total including the fireplace. The floor piece sticks out from the wall about 16 inches. The house is a ranch style, built in the early 50s. My style is classic, clean lines, comfortable.
