Horse chewed my roses!

My Peach Drift and Rainbow's End had several leaves/stems torn off by my horse. Now the Rainbow's End is defoliated except for the very ends of the stems. Does this mean it is going to die? I've been babying these plants, which are bands, and just planted them into the ground last month. I'm really bummed.

I love my animals, but they're always making more work ... and they never clean up after themselves. :)

See now if the horse just did some beneficial pruning or deadheading it would be fine. Or if he snipped them and brought you a bouquet. Or if he smartly fed them his own manure. But no. He has to do it his own way.

I'm constantly lecturing my dogs to help out by digging my planting holes for me or at least to clean the dishes. They never listen.

Instead they dig around my roses to eat the alfalfa. One of them just ate the last Falstaff bloom the other day too. I don't blame him because they smell so good.... but argh!!!!!

They should be able to come back, but it is so sad when this happens. You may have to cage them.

Can't be too cross, horses make food that roses love. I agree cages are the way to go and treat the horses to extra alfalfa.

Bad horse! :-) You let your horse running free like a dog, that's pretty cool! I wish I have land to have a small horse, wanted a miniature donkey same size as a dog, my town won' t let me.

It's a good idea to use chicken wire to protect the roses.

Sorry everyone--I totally forgot about this thread! I don't let my horses run free but two or three days a week, and have never had a problem. I do have a fence around the roses, but the one horse stuck his long neck right over it, and the roses that were within his reach. . . Peace is planted further back, so he didn't get it. They look pretty bad. I guess I'll know in spring. Long time to wait. Thanks for the replies. These horses are spoiled rotten. They already get quite a bit of alfalfa, and treats too. But I guess the roses were just too tempting. . . lol.
