A kudos to Abraham Darby

Hi all. I’m a big fan of this page and drool over all of your beautiful roses. I don’t post that much especially because I’m a big rose dummy, but I feel the need to give a shout-out to my Abraham Darby roses. I’m in Tampa and as you all know, summers here are swampy and ridiculously hot. However, it’s been exceptionally hot so far with highs consistently in the low to mid 90’s and dew point readings pushing 90%. Needless to say, the humidity has been stifling. Rain has been sporadic for me,too. I fully expected my roses to run for cover praying for fall to get here fast. But my AD in particular have been superstars. Absolutely no black spot whatsoever, and beautiful fragrant blooms non-stop. I fully expected black spot like crazy and any buds to simply ball from the humidity. I thank them each day when I tend to the garden.

Do do you have any varities that, despite really lousy weather, have been superstars for you?

Jin, from where did you get LD Braithwaite? He is on my wishlist. Is he grafted? All of your roses are beautiful. PS are you Russian?

I got it from Cool Roses. What made you think I am Russian ?

You accidentally put a Russian link about textiles in your post. Or maybe it's Ukranian. I can't tell.

Welcome jf! Good to know about AD! Jin, your roses are gorgeous! I especially love Penelope! :-)

That’s hilarious—the Russian link—that’s just Houzz being weird. It autocorrects by adding in the strangest stuff.

I also forgot Pat Austin has bloom the best .

I wish I can take full shot bush pics but my weeds won. I hate my weeds and to be honest I have not water my roses since April. My ground is still damp and I checked daily. I know most of Americans are getting so dry weather but I seriously have my own issues here with rain. Oh well, I do best I can be, right ?

I just posted about how amazing Edith Schurr is doing, and Etoile de Lyon is a non-stop bloom machine. My new climber, Setina is super-healthy, as is Prosperity, Sombrueil, and Marachel Niel. Crepsecule wants whole-garden domination, and needs an intervention. :-)

Haha,, I see what you meant...lol

My daughter has Russian name. Nikita :)

It is houzz auto correct...so I am going to leave it , as it is.. that's funny. ROFL I was looking at curtains last month but I guess I might as well read my own link....hahahaha

Cedemas, you have so many roses. Please put some pics...I am dying to see and tell us how they are performing. It is about time for you. Common on, I got mine after you went to Rose petals and I have 1 bloom..so no excuses. :) :) :)

I have a horrible camera and my pics get sent to temporary storage so it's a real pain to upload them. Plus a lot of them are blurry. But here are a few:

    Ambridge Rose

    Scepter'd Isle

Isabella Ducrot (she's bleached out at RPN, too)

    Perle des Jardins plus blackspot

Abraham Darby, smelling mighty fine today!

Souv. de Francois Gaulain, Perle D'or, Drake elm, and weeds galore!

Pot Ghetto (it's my only sunny space). Tomato plant declined rapidly after I moved it to more sun.

What a beautiful setting, Cedemas! I think your roses are really going to appreciate that dappled sunlight. I was thinking about ID; have you had her long enough to notice if her color is richer in fall?

Cedemas, they are beautiful. I love them all.

Perma, your roses are great also. I am looking forward to see more blooms and performance.

So, I am keeping tabs on Floridians Rosarians' Bec our weather is mostly rainy and extremely humid.

Pat Austin, excuse my weeds that sprout in my beds. They are growing non stop and it is a battle going on . And I have to redo my bed tomorrow. My garderner just cut the grass like 5 mins and as usual I got more cut grass back in my beds. Grrrr

It smells so good. Omg, love the scent :)

JF, what other roses do you have ?

    Jin

Perma, Isabella Ducrot had richer color even a month ago. I've had her only since May.

Jin, where did you get your Pat Austin? She is not in the current David Austin catalog. PS do not get the catalog. I got mine a few days ago. It is rose porn on steroids. It is filled with little lies. The pics are beautiful, though.

All, beautiful roses! I’m envious of all your hard work and I know how much of a passion your roses are for you. I left behind all of my roses when we moved into this new house. I’m in the process of redoing the front beds and just about finished all of the bee, butterfly and bird plants. As for my roses, I’ve got the 4 AD and that’s it so far.

I want to get the ones i left behind, too: Louis Philippe: Belinda’s Dream: Lagerfeld: Mr Lincoln: Molineux: Mrs BR Cant: Sombrueil: Climbing America: Don Juan. I’m forgetting some I know.

I usually buy mine from Hardin’s or a nursery on 49th St in St Pete whose name is escaping me. I’ve only bought on fortuniana stock and have been curious about own root for the OGR’s. I amend my soil very well, try to stay as organic as possible and put most of my effort in time spent on just taking care of the garden as much as possible.

I’m 43 years old and have Lupus so some days I’m too tired or too sore to go outside, especially in this crazy heat. But those days are not too frequent thank goodness. I believe that we are stewards of our environment and must help take care of all the critters living with us in this world. I’m happy to see so much beauty in all of your gardens and it gives me hope that we’re all in this together!

JF, You'll probably want to read this full paper.

    https://fshs.org/proceedings-o/1999-vol-112/108-110%20(MANNERS).pdf

The list of recommendations for low-maintenance roses in Florida is sadly very short!

Dr. Manners recommends only Chinas and a mere handful of others as own root for Florida.

We are pushing the limit with the others.

Some people in the northern parts of the state can get away with more varieties. I am not sure about what happens in my part of the state but I have paid special note to the mature specimens on the grounds at the local antique rose nurseries.

It is not true that any tea will work. Some teas are better suited to Florida than others. Also beware of the Earthkind designation. That trial was in Texas, where they don't have the same problems that we face.

There was one similar trial in Florida and a lot of the Florida recommended varieties did not fare well! I can't find the full paper just now but here is the master's thesis upon which it was based:

    http://ufdcimages.uflib.ufl.edu/UF/E0/04/23/16/00001/mangandisanchez_j.pdf

I do have many roses in pots. But I need to be more careful about separating them from the ground.

I have been reading this a lot. I am sorry you been not well but all those roses you had will grow here real well. Like Don Juan, Molineux, Belinda's dream and many more

Take your time choosing. Don't be afraid to grow own roots as long as you amend your soil with manure. And then yearly application to keep nermotodes down. If you are coming here to Orlando, you are welcome to take cuttings. I am not good in growing from cuttings but email me and yes , you can take as much cuttings as you like.

Plumeria girl, i have been eyeing Richards Rose for a few years! Any comments on it?

Micheal, I absolutely love it. It has a little shade until around 10 ish in the morning all till late afternoon. It is so disease free and with so much of daily rain, it never had any black spots. It loves heat and put tons of blooms. I just dead headed him. It is a floribunda and the scent I mild . Sweet smell.

I thought itt won't grow here Bec of the heat but after reading what SoFl wrote that was first rose I order. Heard great reviews in England. So, I believe it should grow for you since you do have winters. Richard's rose has bloom non stop since March and it finally taking a break. But I also see new growth. I just step outside to take latest pic just for you.

Rose is heavy with rain water. It is drench from overnight pour.

I love Richard's songs and his movie..summer holidays. It just bring me old memories of my childhood besides he is a legend in England.

Micheal, you should go for it since you been eyeing on it. Let us know how it perform in your zone. I know you have a short window before fall approaches and you will be getting ready for winter.

jf, so many of us seem to be afflicted with something; with me it's fibromyalgia and I can't stand the heat at all, and I'm often exhausted. We just have to let the things go that we can't do. My husband used to help me until he was diagnosed last December with autoimmune encephalitis. The rabbits this year devoured all my companion plants and many of my roses are affected, but I just got some plants from Annie's Annuals that I hope the rabbits will leave alone. I'm sure in a short time you'll have a lovely garden in your new home, especially if you can salvage the ones from your previous home. It's always a work in progress, and at times it can be very discouraging, but just plugging along sooner or later makes good things happen again.
