For this 1890s historic home in Burlington’s hill section, homeowners needed to update a master bath last renovated in the 1950s. The goal was in incorporate modern, state-of-the-art amenities while restoring the style of the original architecture. Working within the confines of the room’s modest size, we were able to carve out space for a double walk-in shower, an air jetted chromatherapy tub with a custom mahogany deck and a charming vintage style console sink. The custom cabinetry, paneled wainscoting, doors and trim we designer for this project replicated the period millwork of the home, while the polished nickel fittings provided state-of-the-art function with vintage style. Above the tub we added an interior stained glass window that referenced other such period windows in the home.

The perfect winter getaway for these Pacific Northwest clients of mine. I wanted to design a space that promoted relaxation (and sunbathing!), so my team and I adorned the home almost entirely in warm neutrals. To match the distinct artwork, we made sure to add in powerful pops of black, brass, and a tad of sparkle, offering strong touches of modern flair. Designer: Kristie Schneider CKBR, UDCP Photographer: Nathan Lewis Each individual aspect of the room was carefully considered and selected to ensure individual features exemplified the historic integrity of the original home. Vintage push button switches, salvaged and replicated millwork throughout (that expresses detailed craftsmanship) as well as all plumbing fixtures and tile were details carefully decided upon. This small space overflows with historical charm while still creating a usable space with easily maintainable materials. Contrasting hexagonal black and white tile at the floor was considered with a thoughtful pattern. The 3 x 6 subway ceramic tile at the shower walls, wainscoting and decorative black liners allowed for a timeless rhythmic feel that can easily be recognized from the early century era. Equally, echoing small details like a black toilet seat, black painted window sashes, glass cabinet and door knobs all transformed this bathroom into a near replica of the original space.
