Rust Construction
For four generations, Rust Construction has upheld a tradition of fine building. Founder Robert Nelson Rust, Sr. owned farmland covering several hundred acres from Old Town Alexandria to Bailey’s Crossroads in Northern Virginia. In subdividing and developing the Rust Family Farms, large portions of Rosemont, Braddock Heights, Timber Branch, Mount Ida and Beverly Hills neighborhoods were established. Many of the first homes in these areas were built by Rust Construction. The company’s tradition of exceptional workmanship continues today in the construction of new commercial and residential buildings, renovation and remodeling projects, and the restoration of historic properties throughout the region. The firm’s nearly century-long presence in the D.C. metropolitan area affords a familiarity with the region’s complex building regulations and changing needs. Rust Construction is especially familiar with those requirements intended to preserve the aesthetics of buildings in historic districts. Throughout its long history, Rust Construction’s work has commanded respect and high regard. An early leader in sustainable and green building methods, in the 1960s and 1970s the Rust Construction Co. received several passive and active solar research and development grants from the U.S. Department of Energy. Rust Construction used these grants to integrate active and passive solar design elements into new and existing commercial and residential buildings located in urban settings. Later, through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Thomas Rust Sr. taught the fundamentals of solar design. Today, his sons, Tom Rust Jr. and Sam Rust continue the tradition of constant learning and use of best practices.
