Trying to decide what to do with bookshelves!

I just had a new stone fireplace and mantel installed. Now I am trying to decide if I want to paint my bookshelves and put shiplap behind tv or build a rustic frame to go around the t.v.. my mantel is 65" long and my TV is 53" wide. The first picture is what it looks like now. Any suggestions would be awesome!

Whether you paint the bookshelves or not , either would be ok, but I would skip doing the shiplap & not frame the television, it's not a piece of art. I would also consider having those recessed holes above drywalled over.

For me the simpliest solution is to paint your bookshelves, maybe black like your fireplace and TV or with a punch color.

Painting the walls back the bookshelves, with or without to paint these bookshelves, is it in your plan?

I would not do shiplap.
I would remove the shelving leaving the cabinet part of the units. Have a large painting on each side filling that space.

Right now, your stone fireplace surround is the only thing that is white(ish). I'd paint the wall behind the bookcases the same whitish color. Meanwhile, if you like the wood (can't tell from these pics if it's a pretty veining or not) I'd leave it as is. I would NOT frame the TV. I'd also not put anything on your mantle. Your plants seem to crowd the TV. Good luck.

I don't know what shape they are in from the picture, but I like the warmth the wood bookcases bring to the room and go with the wood mantel. From the pic, they carry on the rustic nature of the fireplace.

Depends on your budget but I would carry the stone all the way to the ceiling.

Since you are asking, I would sheetrock the very big very obvious uber modern looking open square spaces above the fireplace...the scale looks like it is pushing the fireplace into the floor.

I love the fireplace transformation. Nice job! I would not frame out or highlight the TV. I think it wou,d really be nice to move the TV to the right bookcase if possible. Artwork vs TV wou,d really bring the beauty of the FP out. Agree, dry walling the upper open spaces would be easier on th eyes, or can they be eliminated or is that a structural cross beam? I like the warmth of existing bookshelf stain and might wallpaper the back in grass like raffia look. Are the bookshelves adjustable?
