Love bougainvillea. Would seem it wouldn't hurt for it to be high if close to house and no hiding place behind. Thorns are bad whatever the height.

There is the TORCH bougainvillea that is low growing ... perhaps 3'. Certain places such as Florida, they can grow taller than a one story house, but they can be easily pruned to maintain a low profile. They have recently been available in stores such as Walmart and Home Depot in Southern CA and people say they are more of a bush type plant. Hope that helps for those curious about bougainvilleas.

  • A lot of good ideas in the article and the comments. the article says 'and ask a neighbor to pick up your newspaper, mail and flyers attached to
your door every day if you are on vacation
.' I disagree; (retired postal worker) in the USA the post office will hold your mail while on vacation with the option of auto-redelivery or you pick it up (better option in case something delays you, saw this happen a lot). our local newspaper does vacation stops. Yes have the neighbors pick up the flyers.
  • Lights, camera, dogs and radio are great.
