If you’re spending more time at home these days, there’s a good chance you’re considering how to improve it indoors and out. If so, searches on Houzz show that you’re definitely not alone.
Searches for swimming pool design and construction pros more than quadrupled (up 334%) on Houzz this June compared with June 2019. Searches for pros to work on deck, patio and porch projects nearly tripled (up 178%) in June compared with a year ago. Homeowners were also interested in indoor projects, with searches for pros to assist with home additions and extensions up 52% this June compared with last June. Homeowners Also Showed Interest in Improving Indoor Spaces
While outdoor spaces held the strongest appeal this June, homeowners also expressed interest in improving their indoor spaces — or even coming up with completely new ones. Searches for pros to work on custom homes were up 87% this June compared with the previous June, while demand for pros who can create custom kitchen cabinetry rose 82% year over year.
Homeowners also made inquiries about kitchen remodeling, up 49% this June compared with the previous June, and bathroom remodeling, up 33% year over year.

Outdoor projects topped the home improvement list, according to June 2020 search results. In addition to the swimming pool and deck, patio and porch projects already mentioned, homeowners sought out more privacy and security. Interest in fence installation and repairs was up 166% compared with the previous June. Additionally, landscape architects and contractors saw demand for their services double in June compared with June 2019.
“We’re the busiest we’ve ever been,” says landscape professional Holly Stickley of The White Pear in Portland, Oregon. “Our clients are forgoing vacations due to the coronavirus pandemic and investing in making their homes more enjoyable to shelter in place.”
