While I've heard of radon gas poisoning I completely forgot to ask about it with my House Designer. Thanks for the article. That will be my next email!

I don't know if it's been said as I havn't read all the comments, but another option is a radion barrier/membrane that has a high radon resistance.

I know this is an older article, but wanted to share my experience with radon. After making an offer on an older home, I learned that both owners had died of lung cancer while in their 70s. Neither was a smoker. As a precaution, I decided to get the house tested for radon. The levels were through the roof! For other reasons, I ended up not purchasing that home. However, 3 years later, I made an offer on another home 1/2 a block away. I had it tested too and again - through the roof! I hired a contractor to install the radon removal system. Now, the levels are nearly 0.

Radon has no odor at all. It is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer. Why take chances? The kits to test your home are under $40. Remediation costs (mine was less than $1500. back in 2012) vary, but far less costly than cancer.
