We worked very closely with the architect to create a multi-generational home for grandparents, their daughter and 2 grandchildren providing both common and private outdoor space for both families. The 12.3 acre site sits facing north on the shore of Lake Champlain and has over 40 feet of grade change from the point of entry down to the lakeshore and contains many beautiful mature trees of hickory, maple, ash and butternut. The site offered opportunities to nestle the two houses into the slope, creating the ability for the architecture to step, providing a logical division of space for the two families to share. The landscape creates private areas for each family while also becoming the common fabric that knits the 2 households together. The natural terrain, sloping east to west, and the views to Lake Champlain became the basis for arranging volumes on the site. Working together the landscape architect and architect chose to locate the houses and outdoor spaces along an arc, emulating the shape of the adjacent bay. The eastern / uphill portion of the site contains a common entry point, pergola, auto court, garage and a one story residence for the grandparents. Given the northern climate this southwest facing alcove provided an ideal setting for pool, utilizing the west house and retaining wall to shield the lake breezes and extending the swimming season well into the fall.
Approximately one quarter of the site is classified as wetland and an even larger portion of the site is subject to seasonal flooding. The site program included a swimming pool, large outdoor terrace for entertaining, year-round access to the lakefront and an auto court large enough for guest parking and to serve as a place for grandchildren to ride bikes. In order to provide year-round access to the lake and not disrupt the natural movement of water, an elevated boardwalk was constructed of galvanized steel and cedar. The boardwalk extends the geometry of the lakeside terrace walls out to the lake, creating a sculptural division between natural wetland and lawn area.

The design solution for the house addition, garage and dance studio sits lightly upon the site and possesses an ethereal feeling, due in part to the use of vertical supports, bridges and viewing platforms. Taking cues from the architecture, the site design extends the lines of the architecture out into the landscape, hovering at times above the ground. An elevated step ramp constructed of steel and Ipe wood and surrounded by native plantings extends down from the front door to the auto court. On the opposite side of the house, a large lawn area bridges the rugged terrain providing a terrace for play while concealing the septic field below. Existing stone outcroppings and introduced blocks of native stone provide transitional seating between the house and lawn terrace.

AARON GREEN ASSOCIATES
Aaron Green Associates - Project: Dukes Residence The Dukes Residence is a tour de force of architectural integrity: the finest craftsmanship, quality materials and attention to details, all orchestrated by Aaron Green. Skillfully designed to integrate wholly within its site, the single story residence stretches out comfortably upon a lush setting of approximately two acres offering rural tranquility and magnificent views of the San Gabriel mountains. The floor plan is arranged according to a unique diamond-shaped organizational module, allowing a naturally flowing movement of space directed along 120° angled corners. Entry to the residence is off the broad auto court, the lines of sweeping low roof lead to a shaded, recessed reentrant corner flanked by solid masonry walls and reached by a series of broad steps. The entry hall beyond the front door is flooded with natural light from a glass enclosed inner atrium garden, which is shared by all bedrooms which wrap around on one side and the living room on the opposite. A gently sloped, diamond shaped folded roof hovers overhead encompassing all bedrooms under its lower sides, providing intimate scaling and privacy. The master bath contains a unique custom designed diamond-shaped sunken bath tub with mitred glass window opening to a view of the garden. The Japanese style fish pool on the opposite side of the glass visually extends the water line of the tub to the exterior, creating a natural sense of bathing outdoors. As the roof rises, a portion extends away and projects beyond the massive fireplace to shelter a generously sized living room. Built-in seating within an alcove is embraced by wrapping masonry walls, almost cavern-like. Yet when seated, one faces the sweeping panorama of the view beyond to the mountains through floor-to-ceiling glass running the entire length of the south elevation. The space is extended further by a patio and extensive landscaping framing a swimming pool. A small diamond shaped guest house containing fireplace and bath is privately placed at the opposite end of the residence. The primary material of the Dukes Residence is buff-colored kaibab stone masonry, both exterior and interior. Panellings and wood trim are mahoghany; the floors a cream-colored terrazzo. The roof is sheathed entirely of copper laid in bermuda fashion, with copper wrapping down over the fascia. This site created and maintained by Aaron G. Green Associates, Inc. Aaron G. Gappsi
Hours of construction and design building led the Gappsi group to create a Thursday Goliath 16x37 fiberglass swimming pool with a 3/8 bluestone gravel base that was installed for the under layer of the pool shell for stabilization. Once the pool was adjusted and numerous factors were considered, the pool was then lifted and dropped in place. After installation, Gappsi associates placed solar tubes around the perimeter of the pool to increase support for the concrete slab of the patio base. This fiberglass swimming pool was installed by Gappsi in Lawrence NY 11559, located on the south shore of Nassau County Long Island. Due to the areas high water table the pool needed to be elevated, and many yards of fill were delivered to raise the grade of the property. We faced many challenges installing this fiberglass pool because of its size and weight. The delivery was the main obstacle because due to the size of this pool, 16x37, it was very costly to cross bridges and drive on highways. Due to the size of this magnificent pool we needed 2 police car escorts to the job site.
The patio pavers used for this job were the Melfi Limestone. This unique stone is an earthy, multi-toned masterpiece; shades of beige, green, brown. and gray bring natural tones to the design. The stones are strategically placed in a Vincenza pattern along with a 2 inch thick random coping for the pool edge. The Melfi Limestone, and many other stones, are exclusively available at Gappsi. The stones are a beautiful contrast to the sapphire blue liner inside the pool. Plus assorted flowers and trees bring in pops of color and interest to the backyard area.
To enhance the aesthetic of the Thursday Goliath fiberglass swimming pool a safety auto cover was installed. The sleek blue auto cover allows customers to easily protect the pool by simply turning a key. The Goliath, 16x37 is 3.8” to 6’8”deep which makes this fiberglass pool a non-diving pool, however, the pool can be used for a plethora of reasons. It's Olympic inspired shape is perfect for a morning workout swim, play water activities/sports with the kids, and allows family and friends to lounge on the extended benches and steps that are molded in the pool shell by the manufacture.
