Project Entry: Stairway to Heaven
2013 PLNA Awards for Landscape Excellence Winner
Category: Residential Up to $15,000
Award Level: Bronze
Project Description:
Battling age arid multiple sclerosis would not deter these homeowners from a relaxing and interactive backyard getaway. It was important to block the nearby homes from the view, while creating an open environment for neighbors to meet and socialize. Their love for landscaping and birds, needed to be joined with a relaxing water feature that could be enjoyed from desired locations inside the house as well as outside. I wanted to incorporate plants they liked, that would work on such a tough slope, and provide year-long interest. By making the water feature the prominent piece in the garden I had to make it naturalize into the hillside, as if it was always there. By the end, a never ending and insurmountable hillside was transformed into their, "stairway to heaven."
This new home construction left little quality topsoil with large amounts of fill soil to stabilize for a successful water feature. Topsoil and mushroom soil were used to amend planting holes for plants, and proper base materials were used for water feature and stairs. Such a steep hill makes equipment difficult to manage. By setting equipment on top of the hill, we were able to drag/winch materials up the hill to put in place.
Due to health conditions of the client, navigation of the hill would require a more functional access. Natural steps and materials were the clients desire, and Techo Bloc's Rocka steps filled both needs. The water feature was constructed with a natural stone bridge to cross and flat stones strategically placed as foot holds. The pondless water feature is constructed using Aquascape's engineered system for filtration and flow. Waterfall rocks are from local quarries to ensure blending and natural elements. Plants were selected to have multiple aesthetic features along with a habitat for many birds. Color was necessary from the first bloom on the Phlox to the first snow dancing on the Miscanthus plume. To meet the client's budget, we designed the garden, planted the trees, supplied the plants and placed the plants for the client to install. The homeowner had the railing and smaller steps installed by others.
With the clients uplifting attitude and determination they became the ushers of the development to welcome new families into the area. Their peaceful transition became a weekend and holiday hotspot where adults can appreciate the beauty while the children playfully splash each other in the stream. Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating disease that can confine your life experiences. Their dreams and conviction led to a therapeutic garden that appears to disappear into the sky. This illusion has brought joy to them and others and trademarked their slogan, "stairway to heaven."

This alterations and additions project is located in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney within a heritage conservation area with the typical challenges of contextual fit, bulk and scale, and assimilation to streetscape. The building itself is an existing dual occupancy configured dwelling with the orientation east to west. This less than ideal orientation resulted in an existing situation which limited natural light to the main living areas of the ground floor. Our client’s desire was to explore solutions that encouraged natural light deep into these living areas and thus the challenge of the ‘Light House’ was created. The interior space was carefully considered, shaped and formed to amplify light and the spatial connection between the different functional zones of the residence. The result transformed the interior into a series of light filled interconnected spaces with a contrasting dark façade which expresses a collection of architectural forms arranged to create balance, function and longevity. In collaboration with our client, we designed a carport with minimal support posts to allow free function around the vehicle. A cantilevered carport structure was created which complemented the existing building in form and detail, satisfying their brief and creating a successful outcome.

There were a few difficulties in making this kitchen any better than how it was. There was a separate staircase that had access to the second floor which was located in the kitchen. This left just enough room to push the dining room to one side. Then, there was the porch. A really nice panoramic view of the back, but was somehow under-used by the family during the summer months. Then, it was the size of the kitchen. It simply was way too small for a growing family, and while it had a peninsular in place, the flow just didn’t work. I remember watching them one day demonstrating how awkward it was using the kitchen. We got it! We had our marching orders to go and figure out how to make this kitchen work for this family.
Everything in the room was fair play. The design was done to make the kitchen very open. For a few ideas, we incorporated the porch in the kitchen by using the nana wall idea but it ended up being too cost prohibitive to do so. We then decided to do a permanent fix by using a commercial glass wall application. Once we figured that out, we moved back inside and removed the staircase. This gave us two added benefits. One allowed us to really reconfigure the kitchen and the other opened up the second floor for a huge built in closet system.
We relocated the windows, added a fire place with a built In TV above. From there, it was onto the kitchen itself which contained a huge Island with seating, large kitchen sink and built in appliances which was set up in a way to take advantage of the new layout. We re-positioned the kitchen facing the beautiful views outside rather than looking towards a wall. Now, when you enter the house up the entry stairs, the kitchen now draws you into the magnificent new open space. This is now setup for entertaining, relaxation, hanging out and most of all, preparing meals in a room where you only have to leave if you want to.
This one was all about the design. Design was what made this space. Setting this space up for success was crucial, and this kitchen is a great example of how design can cover a multitude of sins in Kitchen designs.
… Just close your eyes for a second and imagine waking up one winter morning and having a cup of coffee and watching the snow fall through those huge windows, leaning up against those 3D feature walls while watching the kids sitting around the table enjoying those warm radiant heated floors in this spacious kitchen…..

Sorena's home is a beautiful reflection of her personality, adorned in her vibrant paintings and personal touches that breathed life into every room. When she decided to renovate her kitchen, I had the honor of designing it for her as well as form a connection that I still cherish to this day. Upon my most recent visit to her home to take photos, she greeted me with fresh coffee and pastries, a testament to the warmth of her character.
The renovation journey with Sorena was one filled with creativity and collaboration. As the designer, I took charge of curating the finish and lighting selections, while also assisting in the layout of all the cabinetry. One significant transformation was the decision to replace the existing tile with brand new hardwood floors. This change added a natural warmth to the room, complementing the elegance of other elements and providing a graceful continuity with the rest of her home. The kitchen transformed into a culinary masterpiece, blending elegance with functionality.
The focal points of the space are the La Cornue Stove imported from France and its coordinating custom range hood. Sorena insisted on these for her dream kitchen, and they indeed became the statement pieces that brought the design together. We complemented these with countertops of honed finish quartzite from Italy, which we both fell in love with as soon as we saw it. Its subtle sheen and luxurious feel added an exquisite touch to the space.
No detail was too small in Sorena's kitchen, and every corner had a story. The dreamy breakfast nook, overlooking her koi pond garden, was carefully crafted with a built-in bench adorned with green fabric cushions, providing a cozy spot for morning reflections or intimate conversations.
The project, located in West Chester, PA, was a success not only in the transformation of the space but also in creating her dream kitchen. It became an extension of her artistic flair, a place where she could not only host, but express herself. The inclusion of the hardwood floors and updated breakfast nook was a touch that truly finalized the space, giving it a warmth and continuity that resonated with her personality. It was a privilege to help her achieve her vision, and the gratitude in her eyes as she served coffee in her new kitchen is a memory I will always hold dear. Her kitchen wasn't merely a renovation; it was a manifestation of her dreams, executed with love, care, and a shared passion for beauty and design.

This large oak orangery was designed and built to capitalise on the sensational far-reaching views across the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Situated on top of a hill, this impressive country house required a sensitive design to both complement and enhance the existing building.
A natural oak framed orangery was the ideal solution to make the most of this striking location, whilst working sympathetically with the host property, which was built from Cotswold stone, with timber windows and doors.
Expertly designed by Ian Mitchell, one of David Salisbury’s most experienced designers and a particular specialist with oak buildings, the before and after photos below show the transformation that this new orangery has brought to this property.
The design brief, however, was not entirely straight forward. The challenge was to design a glazed extension that would accommodate the two different door opening heights (best illustrated in the before photo below left), whilst allowing maximum light back into the kitchen behind.
Our customer also requested that the new structure allow a view out above the orangery roof from the vaulted ceiling space behind.
In order to best exploit the outstanding views, and to create a seamless connection with the garden, twin sets of bi-fold doors were designed for each of the new elevations.
Measuring 8.1m wide by 6.1m deep and with a total base area of 49.7 square metres, this large oak orangery has created an open plan living room, extending off the existing kitchen and dining room.
With plenty of space for two sofas, this new living room is the go-to space for relaxing or entertaining family and friends.
A log burner was included in the early stages of the design, to ensure the appropriate flue could be incorporated, whilst providing a lovely atmosphere on Winter evenings.
The finished result is the latest in a long line of oak orangeries, successfully designed and built by David Salisbury, which have helped to transform homes and living spaces all around the country.
As our customer noted: “I am delighted with the Orangery that David Salisbury built for me. From design, through to planning and construction both have been superb, and I would highly recommend them. Before commissioning, we approached other well-known wood frame specialists but found David Salisbury to be the most professional and value for money.”

This historic 1840’s Gothic Revival home perched on the harbor, presented an array of challenges: they included a narrow-restricted lot cozy to the neighboring properties, a sensitive coastal location, and a structure desperately in need of major renovations.
The renovation concept respected the historic notion of individual rooms and connecting hallways, yet wanted to take better advantage of water views. The solution was an expansion of windows on the water siding of the house, and a small addition that incorporates an open kitchen/family room concept, the street face of the home was historically preserved.
The interior of the home has been completely refreshed, bringing in a combined reflection of art and family history with modern fanciful choices.
Adds testament to the successful renovation, the master bathroom has been described as “full of rainbows” in the morning.
Artscape Garden Associates Ltd
This riverside garden with sun terrace in Marlow, Buckinghamshire was redesigned by Artscape to create a safe, attractive and more effective link between the house and the river. The original garden was very run down. The plan was to create a new paved upper sun terrace by the house and build a series of steps leading down to the boat mooring. This successful bespoke garden design weaves hard landscaping and plants with texture and shape to create a harmonious setting and enhances the views of the garden and river scene.
Hard landscaping: stone terrace and timber steps
The upper sun terrace has been created using natural sandstone paving. Sandstone can be cut easily to create bespoke shapes and looks naturally elegant laid in a random pattern. This beautiful natural stone is slip resistant, requires little maintenance and is ideal for a family terrace. We built a new set of oak sleeper steps with binding gravel. The oak sleeper steps create a durable and attractive way to reach the mooring from the terrace. Oak timber is a hardwood which weathers well and gives a softer, more forgiving edge compared to the exposed sharper edges of stone. New lighting was installed in the garden and around the steps which has a magical atmosphere and improves safety at night.
Planting scheme
This planting scheme was designed to provide plenty of visual interest when viewed from both the house and the river. In planning the planting, Artscape’s horticulturalists took account of the riverside setting where breezes affect planting movement. The team focused mainly on architectural form and texture, with colour used for additional emphasis. The plants include Cordylines, tactile grasses, ferns and low-maintenance herbaceous perennials. Cordylines have a dramatic, palm-like appearance and attractive foliage in shades of green, bronze and purple, and they are happiest grown in a mild, frost-free location like the garden setting here.

“Traditional Cotswold house, impressive galleried hall to open plan living linked to outside space with far reaching southerly views ”
Our clients would like to build a 4 bed oak frame home in the Cotswolds.
Project Background
The owners bought their plot in a pretty village location intending to knock down the existing 1970’s bungalow.
Both are commercial pilots with very busy lifestyles and are keen to have a turnkey service with the design and build of their oak frame home fully project managed.
Having submitted a pre planning application before our involvement the couple were concerned they would be limited to a 7.5m ridge height – which at best would mean a one and half storey house. We’ve since been successful obtaining planning permission for a full 8.3m ridge height two storey oak frame home.
The House
This new home will have four bedrooms, a study and an open plan kitchen and living area opening onto a terrace with views across open countryside. The floor plans are shown above.
Progress
This project was completed in Summer 2016. We really love this build as it has so much character from the grand entrance and hallway, the balcony and the oak frame exterior and interior.

We recently completed the design and construction of this beautiful 3800 s.f. contemporary Colorado mountain home, above the foothills of Boulder. We designed the house to maximize the sweeping views of Indian Peaks mountain range, while simultaneously optimizing passive solar design. The open floor plan brings natural light and passive cooling into every part of the house; the vaulted ceilings create an airy, sunny feeling. Every room opens to generous patios and decks to facilitate easy indoor/outdoor living. White Oak floors, granite counters and local flagstone finishes lend a warm modern texture to the home. We carefully preserved one hand-built quartz wall that was part of the house that formerly occupied the site, and restored the original adjacent homestead, successfully receiving Historic Landmark designation. This very energy efficient home (HERS 40 – uses 60% less energy than allowed by code), uses solar–photovoltaics, foam insulation, Energy Star windows & appliances, LED lighting, and a high-efficiency mechanical system. It uses EPA Watersense plumbing fixtures and Xeric landscaping to dramatically reduce water

Located on the west side of Cumberland Avenue, between York and George, this condo development includes 38 units within walking distance of core amenities. The building features different materials and bold colours to clad the building at the street level and creates a sense of rhythm and articulation. The cantilevered third floor projects out past the front and side of the building to create a dynamic form. Space for a public art installation was created on the building façade which formed part of the planning approval through consultation with the City. A forecourt is created at the street level with a dramatic exposed wood column that helps to form a sheltered recess near the entry. The wood frame structure is sustainable by nature; the project received the prestigious WoodWorks 2012 Design Excellence Award (Multi-Unit) in recognition of this achievement and for its contribution to awareness of the appeal of wood construction in Ontario. This project showcases a successful contemporary, in-fill construction in the four to six storey scale and demonstrates that design quality does not need to be compromised in modestly scaled developments.

The Bazeley Partnership
Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Conservation Area, Harwood Cottage is a Grade II Listed, three bedroom, Georgian cottage located within Old Town in the heart of the iconic North Cornwall coastal village of Boscastle.
The restoration was led by careful consideration of context and materiality. Early engagement with Cornwall Council’s Conservation Officer contributed to the successful outcome of a planning application to replace poorly constructed and unsympathetic modern additions at the rear of the property. The new accommodation delivered an extended kitchen and dining area at ground floor with a new family bathroom above.
Creating a relationship between the house and the extensive gardens, including an idyllic stream which meanders through Boscastle, was a critical element of the brief. This was balanced finely against the sensitivity of the Listed building and its historical significance.
The use of traditional materials and craftmanship ensured the character of the property was maintained, whilst integrating modern forms, materials and sustainable elements such as underfloor heating and super-insulation under the gables made the house fit for contemporary living.
