Four Season Vegetable Gardening

Corner Brackets for Raised Beds

I want very much to buy or make corner brackets for my raised bed gardens that allow me to just slip my 2x6 pieces of lumber in and out so I can easily move my beds or replace a piece of wood. Frankly, the sets I see in garden catalogs are just too expensive.

Has anyone designed their own? If so, would you give me some pointers? Or, do you know where I can obtain corner brackets for less than $30 for a set of four?

I have occasionally seen these on Ebay but you have to keep checking.

You can save some money by buying metal brackets at HD or any place that sells lumber. They have what you need in the lumber section rather than the hardware section. They are galvanized angle brackets that have a bunch of holes punched in them and are used to join framing lumber like 2x4, 2x6, etc. You need brackets about 5" high for use with 2x6 lumber and they are about $2 each if I remember right.

Sorry, you can't just slip the lumber in them. You use the brackets on the inside of the corner and screw into the lumber with galvanized deck screws (about 1-1/2 inch long). It is really fast with an electric drill and a philips bit; if your lumber is really tough you might have to drill a pilot hole first but it is usually not necessary. You can disassemble them easily but it is not something you want to do frequently. They don't look great but are usually covered with dirt anyway.

DeWitt has the right idea here. Keep the house floating, but you definitely must paint the steel in a similar shade to the roof. The white just looks awkward. It's a hard space to deal with because it is so pronounced. If it was a shorter height you could do a bunch of stuff, but being as high off the ground as it is, you want to minimize its presence in the overall scheme. Personally, I'd use some black, powder coated, perforated metal screen set back like DeWitt suggested and rock from the screen to just outside the steel...then use a ground covering plant. Make one of the panels an a access, and have the screen backlit so, at night, a warm glow comes through the holes. This would give a nice "levitation" feel. I also know that this wasn't mentioned (or asked for), but one other thing I might do to tie everything together is to make the column and handrail out of steel and paint it the same as the rest of the structure. Just my $0.0375 (2 cents adjusted for inflation).

If space is an issue, like the condos I am familiar with, bookshelves will only close your space in more and create a sense of tension over your head. You need to soften your hard edges and make them less obvious, as kellyzdesinging above states, with a plant and coming forward as much as you can stand from the wall. You will have fun searching for these options: Get a tallish leafy plant on the narrow side because of your tight corner space problem. Avoid snake plants and palms. I use braided benjaminas (ficus) grown in an umbrella fashion because they bring up the eye and make a cozy canopy over the couch. I further put tiny string lights in the canopy and it's beautiful. You can even trim a ficus smaller to fit your space. Even if it's 6 feet in hight the pot and trunk will fit behind the couch in that corner and give you plenty of head and lamp table room. . Explore other plants too such as a stunning flowering "Crown of Thorns" with a long thick stem and have fun. Consider raising the plant off of the floor and placing it on a tiny corner table behind your task lamp. The light will create drama under the plant. This is my favourite corner problem trick. Although the glass above your couch brings in more light, it too has hard edges that only repeats the weird corner effect that bothers you so I suggest a stretched canvas without a frame in its place. This will work better for you: You have a good sense of "anchor" on your floor and taste in colour accents to work with your condo neutrals. So I suggest taking the time to have fun to work with the quality accents you now have and look for the most beautiful large bright painting stretched over a frame you can find and that grabs you, to place 12 inches above your low-backed couch. Have fun looking for that. It will be so much more "you" and personal than the hard-edged mirror. Look forward to seeing an after pic!

The electricity makes it a good place for a fountain. The wood boards look like they are past their prime. Is there a continuation of the brick edging under the big window? If so, you could remove the extra soil and add sod in the corner. Or you could put in a more substantial brick border, renew the soil with a vast amount of compost, and plant a showstopper flower garden. If you do that, plan to replace the thriving small flowerboxes with larger custom or readymade flowerboxes that span the width of each window. A garden bed renovation is a good time to get the downspout to drain beyond the sidewalk; some digging and tunnelling may be necessary.

Lee Valley sells a set of 4 for $9.50 + shipping. $8.50 if you buy 5 sets or more. These are actually not designed for this purpose, but are really designed as "pallet hinges" aka "pallet bin hinges". http://www.palletfactory.com/index.html has more information. But I have been unsuccessful finding a US source that sells in small quantities.

Bobb has a great idea about using galvanized framing brackets. Take a look at the Simpson Strong Tie catelog for inspiration. I use joist hangers (face hangers) at the corners and a few RC style clips to hold courses together.

The price of a set of 4 hinged corners from Lee Valley is now $12.80 ea set, or $11.50 for 5 or more sets. Still considerably less than brackets I've found elsewhere, and an extremely useful product.

My raised beds are not fine furniture. I made them from former 2x6 white oak boards that were part of the tobacco racks on our farm. My beds are 6", 12" or 18" high and 10-25' long. Boards are NOT attached at the corners, as my soil has much clay, and I really want drainage at all times in my area. I use steel rods, recycled steel posts and even pieces of metal conduit as stakes to hold the sides in place. Some of the boards have slight curves from age. For me, these are the best beds I have ever had. I will never fasten corners again. Might work for you.

I will be exchanging cinder block for my wood beds beginning this year. My friend uses 8 inch blocks to border his raised beds and never has to touch them. In addition, he fills the holes in the blocks with soil and grows herbs/flowers in those.
He found his blocks(100 of them) in a shopper's paper for $1.00 ea. Says he found others for 50 cents, but they were used. What do I care if they were used?
