Hosta Of The Year. 2013

Hello Everyone,

It is time, once again, to pick three Hostas for the 2013 Hosta Of the Year. Please post these by May 25th so that I can get them sent in on time. ..The selection is based on these three things.

1. It must be a good plant that will grow in all regions of the country

2. Must be widely available on the year of selection.

3. Must retail for around $15 in the year of selection.

    WOW! I thought we gave our vote for 2012 just 3 months ago for Liberty. Why now for 2013 already? What happened to 2011? How can someone predict hosta prices 3 years from now and select what he/she will like in 3 years?

    Queen of the Seas - beautiful blue and ripply

    Fire Island - gold with awesome red speckles up the petioles

    Rainforest Sunrise - lovely gold, puckery and a nice edge

    This is just the beginning of a year long process. Over 80 retailers and wholesalers will submit three nominees. It will then be reduced by picking from a final 20 then a final 10 and then a final three and then H.O.Y..This is a democratic process that narrows down the nominees over a period of a year. It then takes two more years to grow the winner to a sellable size from tissue culture.
    I hope this explains the process a little better.

    Queen of the Seas: a blue would be a nice choice in 2013.

    Touch of Class: blue and yellow, nice combo.

    Dancing Queen: yellow is the spark of color in any bed.

    Rainforest Sunrise - Giving it a little more shade this year. With 7-8 hours of long-day sunlight, it looks tired at the end of summer
