I've seen it done with inset uppers and frameless lowers, which basically look the same as full overlay---it looks lovely, and honestly I suspect that people who aren't TKO don't notice the difference much of the time.

We are mixing inset and frameless too, though on different sides of the room rather than uppers/lowers. But I would think seriously about frameless vs. full overlay if your cabinet line offers that option---you'll pick up some storage space with the drawers, and you end up with essentially the same look.

The local dealer for Plato cabinets in our area had a display kitchen with inset uppers and frameless base cabs and I LOVED it. No space lost in the drawers below and it looked great. Had we gone with them it's what I would have done. Unfortunately, our cabinet maker didn't make frameless so we did inset top and bottom. Every time I try to store something in a drawer and it doesn't fit (just a tad too tall), I wish I'd gone for the frameless base cabinets.

That's what I did.

I saw a display kitchen done that way and it looked very nice. I didn't even notice the lowers were full overlay until the salesperson pointed it out. Casey's (above) looked great. Just make sure you get full overlay, not partial.

Thanks for the responses. I talked with my KD today and I think we are going with inset uppers and lowers. Narrowed it down to Shiloh cabinets with Montgomery inset doors with a mocha glaze. Below is my new design, your comments are welcome...
