Need hand holding with the kitchen colours/finishes

Hi everyone,

We have finally got to the stage of getting quotes for cabinets so we can move forward and actually order our kitchen that we have been designing for so long. For reference there is a picture of the layout, but the quest at this stage is to see if the finishes we are leaning toward will work and are pleasing. I could really use your help and reassurance if appropriate.

Here is where we are leaning. There is a photo at the end that shows the samples.

Island cabs: dark stained brown maple (like colour raisin at Home Depot). In the picture we have a cherry door, but it will be maple in a similar colour.

Perimeter cabs: Dover maple from Home Depot. This is a very grey warm off white/light greige. This colour corresponds quite closely with SW's Modern Gray (SW7632)

Counters (both island and perimeter) Bakay Cinza from Home Depot (see photo)

Walls (which there are hardly any of due to cabinets, windows, open concept etc) to be a med/dark blue. Leaning towards SW Needlepoint navy (SW 0032). In the picture there is a large paper paint chip showing the colour. Again there will not be much of this colour. Please note I am a blue freak so want blue somewhere.

Floor: medium brown with grey undertones hardwood (see sample in picture).

Island hood: This will be different and a bit risky. We will get a Modern-aire hood. We are planning to have it powder coated in the same blue as the wall and have a bit of stainless trim. If you imagine the hood in the houzz picture I have posted with the body of the hood painted in the wall blue (SW needlepoint navy) you will get the idea. I dislike the bulkiness of wood, and prefer a colour over plain stainless. I adore blue and know the hood will be a focal point so I might as well like that focal point.

Decorator plates (see photo of sample plate and layout for location of plate shelf).

handles, pendants, cabinet door style, back splash etc not there yet at all. Wondered about oil rubbed bronze for the handles. Any suggestions on any of these items would be welcome.

Sink: Silgranit sink. I am not sure what colour any suggestions here?

Adjoining rooms will be painted Dutch tile blue SW 0031 (greeny blue).

Appliances: Mostly stainless

Let me know what you think and what you like and dislike. Thanks so much! I have cross posted this on the decorator forum as they deal with colours often so I was unsure what forum would be best.

Carol

Layout:

Sample plate. If this does not go with the other wall/vent blue I also have some Hummel plates that are not blue. The blues one can go in the dining room instead.

Sample photo

Houzz inspiration for Modern-aire vent. Ours to be same blue as kitchen wall paint (SW needlepoint navy) and accented with a bit of stainless steel.

I like it! Do get a sample of the island cab stain on maple though--maple doesn't always behave with a dark stain.

The wall color is daring but like you say, not much of it so it won't be too much. How about ceiling color?

I love the idea of a blue hood. Make sure it's the perfect blue and go for it.

Be sure the plates on the wall are firmly attached and not just hanging like you'd normally do! They have a tendency to get bumped onto the floor, and the island seating might add to the danger.

Thanks for your comments, fori. So glad to hear you like it. I did not know that maple with a dark stain does not behave well. Perhaps we should do cherry for the island, but stick with maple for the perimeter cabs?

We are planning on SW pure white for the ceilings and trim. However, I have considered mixing a tiny bit of the wall colour into the ceiling colour.

Good point about the plates. This will need to be carefully planned out. Perhaps we will limit the plate display to high up so it is less in the way. Anchoring it firmly to the shelf will be a priority.

So glad to hear you like the idea of the blue hood.

In the link below I have posted a close colour match with the perimeter cabinets as the photo I took is rather washed out for this colour. I found among my SW paint swatches their "modern gray" was a good match to the Dover maple cabinets from Home Depot's Thomsville collection of stains/cabinets.

Here is a link that might be useful: Modern Gray SW colour

Plates will be safer if they're on a shelf, unlike my mother's doomed plates just hanging by a picture hook on the wall of a major traffic zone. Or mine. :)

Not everyone is unsuccessful with darker maple stains. But it can turn out blotchy, maybe because the wood is so dense and hard? I don't know. But it can look good. I think some cabinet manufacturers do better than others so a sample would be helpful.

I'm not especially good with colors and stuff but personally, I would enjoy this combo.

Anyhoo, here's a bump. The color people must be on vacation!

Thanks fori for your input. A high up plate shelf sounds wise. The plates have sentimental value to me.

I am curious if others who have done dark cabinets have used cherry or maple.

We've had both espresso and extremely dark brown almost black maple cabinets in two of our homes. We had no blotches, both sets of cabinets were stained in factory by the cabinet companies.

I also though have seen a few dark maple cabinet doors here on GW that were spotchy so I also recommend getting a sample first if you decide to use maple.

Good to know xc60. I will check out those dark maple cabinets for blotches. On the other hand, cherry for the dark island is growing on me. Can one do cherry for an island and maple for the perimeter or is that inadvisable? How does the colour in cherry wood change over time (in other words what colour tones creep into the wood over time)?

I like your color palette. The color of the cherry door you posted is beautiful. The blue paint & countertop look great with the cabinet color & floor.
I like in the Houzz picture how they muted & softened the green so that it blended with the stainless. Still green, but not overwhelming.

I have a dark cherry vanity--it's Kraftmaid with Kaffe stain. I don't think dark-stained cherry will change tone over time. The stain covers the red tones. The vanity has a trim piece that I believe is maple. It doesn't quite have the depth and richness of the stain on the cherry.

I love the blue you've chosen. The Modern Gray looks purple on my monitor. Is Bakay Cinza a granite and is that the speckled countertop sample? That isn't knocking my socks off.

    Romy718,

Thanks for your input. Thanks for the vote on the cherry island cabinet and other choices. I'm glad you think the choices go together. I might just be leaning closer to cherry dark stain rather than maple dark stain. Your comments on the Houzz hood have got me thinking we should consider a lighter shade of blue (same blue as the paper sample photographed but in a lighter shade)? What do you think about our plans for the deep blue hood with stainless accents?

    May_flowers,

Thanks for your comments on cherry. Glad to hear that you find dark stained cherry does not change in colour over time. Good to hear your comparison with a maple dark stained trim piece. This is valuable info.

Thanks for your thought on the blue. I don't think the dover cabinet colour (which is quite similar to SW modern Gray) looks purple in real life, but maybe I am missing an undertone. I have taken another picture of the counter sample with small cabinet square all on a white background. Does it still look purple to you this time? It is hard to tell about the counter until we see a big slab. If it is very speckled, I might not like it as well in a large expanse. I do like that it reads as a grey background and not cream.

Your kitchen will be awesome, 'specially with a blue modern-aire! Pls do a reveal when completed.
