Landscaping incompetence. As in whomever was hired to design and plant in the landscaping there. They should have chosen different plants that didn't require the hard cutting. And then also the landscaping maintenance company that has been doing the cutting- not so much their fault, they have to keep stuff cut back. Likely a general company that might not have anyone on crew that knows great trimming practices, so everyone trims everything kind of the same way. Might be somewhat due to the hardscaping and mulch. It can look good, but not all plants do very well in the surrounded by concrete and buried in rock mulch enviornment.

Crepe murder is ubiquitous. ‘It makes them bloom better’. It’s so frustrating since they can become such lovely mid sized trees. I’m in savannah and even the mayor argues against it, but in nearby cities like Athens the city tortures their crepes every year.

Another problem with that is someone will see what he did and may think that's the way it should be done. So many copycat murders will follow. :-o

It might be a horticultural crime, but if it’s still alive how can it be murder? A few years ago I ran across this allée at Chandor Gardens in Weatherford, TX. I was surprised this tree could get so tall.

Maybe not a Felony but definitely a gross misdemeanor.

Old thread, but I have to comment. I've seen some local crapes cut way back and then sprayed with dormant oil as one remedy for the awful crape myrtle bark scale that has moved into the region. There's no way you can treat an entire plant if it's full sized. Sometimes you gotta do whatch gotta do.
