Important exception: I have ONLY had problems winter sowing seeds that germinate too quickly, and only one time in several years. Meaning, I have sown seeds in frigid freezing weather, and then a freak warm spell of a few of days forced germination WAY too early. By WAY too early, I mean February in Maine. Truly, a freak warm spell. Warm spells later in the season followed by freezing weather has never been a problem, but germination of more tender species in February was too early. I think Rudebeckia was one of the seeds. They actually survived in the jug for a while, but eventually the cold was too cold. Again, that was a rare freak year. The only way I counter it now is to just sow a small number of seeds with quick germination a little later.
