Welcome Db! You might want to browse around on the GW container gardening forum for what medium does best in smart pots. I don't often grow in containers but I don't think pure compost is recommended due to some of the issues you have encountered. There is a 5-1-1 mix that is often recommended over on that forum.
I think I may have put up too many veggies in our freezer last year. We are using it up but I'm not sure we can use it all before the 2018 harvest begins. I have corn, green beans, leeks, onions, carrots, brussels sprouts, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, and horseradish in the freezer and lots of pickled cukes, peppers, green beans, and asparagus in the pantry as well as about 30 pints of Annie's Salsa.
I've grown a few different Brussel Sprouts in the fall over the last 4 or 5 years including Catskill and Long Island Improved neither of which did very well for me with only tiny sprouts to show for the effort. The last 2 falls I have grown a hybrid named Jade Cross E and it has done much better than the 2 heirlooms. Here in the KC area I start the seeds indoors in mid June and plant them out in mid July at about 5 weeks old. I bought the seeds from Harris seed....Johnny's doesn't offer it.
Here is my harvest from a couple days before Thanksgiving last year.
